Renew Appalachia Millions of acres in Appalachia have been left in a degraded state as the result of surface mining.

Our goal is to show a pathway for repurposing these legacy minerals lands with sustainable activities that support their surrounding communities.

Kentucky State University has won a $2 million grant to invest in Eastern Kentucky's people and land. Over the next four years, a new training center will teach about 1,000 local residents the skills to restore old minelands and put them back to work, with hands-on fieldwork in Martin County. It's a real investment in the coalfields' future, led by Kentucky's only public land-grant HBCU. Friends of Coal is glad to see it.

SNAKES! Learn more, fear less! Fear of snakes is common. But fear does not have to lead to panic. A little knowledge can help Kentuckians recognize that most snakes they encounter are not a threat, and even venomous snakes are best handled with distance, caution and respect.
