Children don’t choose to struggle with reading.
But they do remember how those struggles made them feel. Children who can’t yet read well often carry invisible emotional burdens alongside their academic ones.
That’s why early identification and evidence-based reading instruction are so important.

Is holding a child with dyslexia back a good idea if they are behind? It depends on the child. Most experts don't think it's a good idea. The research is mixed, showing some short-term academic gains but longer-term problems with social/emotional development and self-esteem. One thing is for sure - having a child repeat a grade makes no sense if they will be receiving the same instruction and interventions they already had.
