While most of the community is still waking up, our Nutrition Services team is already preparing meals, following strict food safety standards, and making sure every child has access to nutritious food.
Their work often happens behind the scenes, but its impact is seen in every classroom. Thank you for serving our students with care and dedication every day. ๐
The most regulated kitchen in your city is not a Michelin-starred restaurant.
ย
It is your school cafeteria. And the people running it are there every single morning whether anyone notices or not.
ย
That is what showing up looks like.
ย
If you work in school nutrition, drop your school name below. We want this thread to be a map of every cafeteria showing up today. ๐

Time for another โWhy You Show Upโ shout out! This week, our shout out goes to Renee at Loveland Classical Elementary!
I show up because as I get to know each individual student, I look forward to their day and seeing them come through the line. I very soon realized that Iโm a huge part of their day and how it goes! The most recent memorable moment that has stayed with me was the simplest interaction. I was having a rough morning as I crossed paths with a kindergarten student. In my hurry I barely noticed her, but she stopped and looked at me and was genuinely happy to see me! She wished me a good morning with a huge smile, and it just melted my heart. This interaction turned my day around instantly, and it reminded me of my purpose to be there and why I show up. I show up for the kids!
School lunch is more than just lunch, food is truly my โlove languageโ. Being in the same school for a while has allowed me to really get to know the students. I will notice the most selective eater grow into someone who is really interested in food. To see that little person be excited and be genuinely thankful gives me that โa-haโ moment. After many years of creative culinary experiences, what better way to change course than to take a path where I play a part in helping young minds grow and learn. Thompson School District

Time for another โWhy You Show Upโ shout out! This week, our shout out goes to Helen over at Stansberry!
I enjoy my job, and I especially enjoy the group of people that I work with. This job keeps my mind alert and I feel like I am doing something that is meaningful. The kiddos always put a smile on my face no matter what kind of day I am having.
When I take a moment to wave at the little ones in the toddlers room and they wave back with a smile, it touches my heart. Sometimes theyโll even prepare some type of greeting when they come to the kitchen and it always makes my day. TSD has meant the world to me in my time here, and this is a job that I truly take so much pride in. The meals are excellent and form the basis for learning, so itโs crucial that these kids are fed well! Thompson School District

Keeping in the positive spirit of last week, we'll be posting more responses from our staff on why they show up! What keeps them going on the tough days, what this job means to them, and fun experiences that they've had while working here. This week, our shout out goes to Carla who is one of our Substitutes here at Nutrition Services!
I really enjoy my job, and especially enjoy the group of people that I work with. This job keeps my mind alert and I feel like I'm doing something that is meaningful. The kids put a smile on my face no matter what kind of day I'm having!
When I take a moment to wave at the little ones in the toddlers room and they wave back with a smile, it touches my heart. Or when the kids come into the lunch room with some type of greeting or a card it's truly a special feeling of connection. TSD has meant the world to me, and being able to serve the kids has been a wonderful experience. The meals are excellent and form the basis for learning, and in some instances it may be the only balanced meal that some kids may receive! This is a job I truly take pride in, and it gives me immense joy being able to work in this field. Thompson School District

School Lunch Hero Day was a massive success!
Last Friday, schools celebrated School Lunch Hero Day and students across the district got to show their appreciation for our Nutrition Services team. Kids wrote special notes for our kitchen staff, and crafted fun cards for them to hang on their walls and remind them just how appreciated they are every day! We would not be the department we are without every single one of our amazing team members, and we want to send a special thank you to everyone across the district that made this day so wonderful! Happy School Lunch Hero Day! To celebrate, weโre sharing another story submitted by one of our team members. This story is from Lisa who works at Big Thompson Elementary!
I show up to have fun and feed the kids, they always make me smile! One of my students was actually inspired to work in Nutrition Services after they graduated. It made me feel like I was here for a purpose. On one occasion, I was having a bad day and was kind of grumpy. A kindergarten student told me that I needed a nap, because when he gets grumpy naps always help him to feel better. He was right!
This has been my career for 28 years, and it means so much to me. Itโs a big part of who I am. I started because of the hours when my youngest was in first grade. Iโve seen some former students who are now teachers, doctors, athletes, and just wonderful people who still remember me. School meals are powerful and crucial, because not only are they tasty and nutritious, but the people serving them are also important in helping children learn manners and respect. We always make sure we make their meals with LOVE!!! Thompson School District
