Anne Braden’s love of reading and deep faith shaped her commitment to justice.

This month, the Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research highlights three books from the collection:
When God Was a Woman by Merlin Stone
Sexism and God-Talk: Toward a Feminist Theology by Rosemary Radford Ruether
Feminist Interpretation of the Bible edited by Letty M. Russell.

These works reflect Braden’s dedication to challenging oppression, including within religion. Her pursuit of knowledge and belief in justice as a moral duty continue to inspire those fighting for equality today.

Black Panther: The Revolutionary Art of Emory Douglas highlights the powerful imagery of Emory Douglas, the artist who gave the Black Panther Party its bold visual voice in the fight for justice and liberation.

Emory Douglas was the Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party and the revolutionary artist behind its iconic visual style.

From the late 1960s through the 1980s, his bold, graphic illustrations in The Black Panther newspaper depicted the struggles of Black communities and called for resistance against systemic oppression.

His art was a form of political education, mobilizing people to take action against police brutality, economic injustice, and racial inequality.

Douglas' work continues to inspire contemporary movements for social justice, proving that art can be a powerful tool for revolution.
