Cable operators don't need to replace their networks to get more out of them. CableLabs recently published a new optional annex to the DOCSIS 4.0 Physical Layer Specification that extends downstream operation to 3 GHz, unlocking up to 25 Gbps of aggregate capacity over existing hybrid fiber coax (HFC) infrastructure.

Developed with input from operators and equipment vendors through the DOCSIS 4.0 PHY Working Group, the annex is an industry first: it defines downstream requirements to 3 GHz for both Node/Remote PHY Device equipment and cable modems, giving the industry a common technical foundation to build on.

Ricardo Villa, Lead Physical Layer Technologies Architect, and Karthik Sundaresan, Distinguished Technologist and Director of HFC Solutions, share how the industry got here and what's next for HFC evolution.
