Afterschool Critter Club

Our Afterschool Critter Club is built for kids who have already spent a full day in school and are ready to move, explore, ask questions, and get their hands on some incredible animals.

This fall’s theme is Nature’s Superpowers—an energetic, hands-on exploration of the extraordinary adaptations animals use to survive. Kids will investigate everything from camouflage and thermal vision to super strength, unusual body systems, and nature-inspired engineering.

And this isn’t a huge afterschool program where kids disappear into the crowd.

Each Critter Club session is capped at just 10 participants, giving every child meaningful time interacting with our reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates and plenty of opportunities to participate, ask questions, and make discoveries.

Critter Club is led by Becca McGeary, M.Ed., My Nature Lab’s Education Director. Becca brings a Master’s Degree in Education, more than a decade of experience in public schools and private life-science instruction, and a talent for turning complex science into creative, engaging experiences kids genuinely enjoy.

Small group. Incredible animals. Creative lessons. Serious learning disguised as a really good time.

Fall sessions meet Tuesdays or Wednesdays from 3:45–5:00 PM and run for six weeks. Tuition is $180 per session.

Homeschool Biology - Hands On Science.

At My Nature Lab, our homeschool students learn biology by doing biology.

Our classes are intentionally small—just 6–10 students—so kids have time to ask questions, build relationships with their instructors, work closely with live animals, and actually participate in the science instead of getting lost in a crowd.
Our programs combine professional biology experience with thoughtful, creative instruction. Lessons are built around live animal encounters, field investigations, science labs, maps, data collection, art, literature, games, outdoor exploration, and whatever creative approach will make a biological concept come alive.

One week might involve studying an animal up close. Another might mean heading into the field, collecting data, analyzing a map, running an experiment, or following a question somewhere we never expected it to go.

That’s what we want: curious kids doing real science, guided by Becca and Cameron, inspiring a future generation of biologists and real conservation.

Enrollment is now open for our Fall 2026–Spring 2027 Homeschool Biology Programs, with classes for ages 4 through High School.

100K FOR THE LAB

On September 19, I’m attempting the Grindstone 100K.  One hundred kilometers through the mountains of Virginia. I’ve spent much of this summer preparing for it. Most weeks, I’ve had one real day off. And I’ve spent a lot of those days in the Colorado mountains. Running at altitude. Climbing. Putting hours into my legs. Trying to prepare my body and my brain for what happens late in a 100K when continuing stops being automatic.

Originally, this was simply a race I wanted to attempt. Then someone at our My Nature Lab camping trip this pat weekend said:

“Why don’t you turn it into a fundraiser for the Lab?”

Someone else immediately agreed. I hadn’t thought of it. But they were right. So here’s what we’re doing.

It costs approximately $12,000 per month to cover My Nature Lab’s non-payroll operating expenses. When we include approximately $15,000 in payroll for the people who care for our animals, teach our students, and run our programs, a complete month costs approximately: $27,000.
That’s the ultimate goal.

But I’m not simply asking you to donate.

MAKE ME EARN IT.

Pledge something for every kilometer I complete: 25 cents. 50 cents. $1. $5. $10. Whatever works for you.

If I complete the whole 100K, I earn all 100. If my race ends early, you only owe for what I actually accomplish.

You can also put a bonus on the finish line. And because this is My Nature Lab, you can put bonuses on any snakes, turtles, lizards, frogs, or salamanders I encounter along the way.

This is just a reminder that My Nature Lab will be closed this weekend, August 21, 22, and 23. We will be in New Mexico looking for pink snakes with our Patron and Sustaining members. It isn’t too late to join us. Email us at [email protected] for information on how to upgrade your membership.

Today at My Nature Lab - Bullfrogs and Big Snakes or Big Snakes and Bullfrogs

Last night, our volunteer crew got to participate in a bullfrog removal effort at a wetland that is being restored in hopes of increasing amphibian and reptile diversity. American Bullfrogs are incredible predators but also terribly invasive meaning that they cause ecological harm where they occur outside of their native range. Come learn all about them and watch Cameron dissect the frogs we caught to help qualify their impacts. Between dissections, Cameron will also get out one of our bigger snakes and smaller snakes. Here is the schedule for today:
