Attending early learning programs is linked to a 6% increase in high school graduation and a 5.5% increase in attendance at a four-year college.

Our blog post, "Connecting the Dots Between Early Childhood Education and Third Grade Reading" talks about how early childhood education programs pave the way for children's success. And, how conversational turns play a role in that as well!

We agree! Sometimes, we can't believe it either. Responsive relationships and having actual conversations WITH children instead of talking TO them makes such a huge impact on their lives!

"Who would have thought something as simple as a conversation can lead to competency and self-awareness, and transform a child? But it has, and it does." - Eva Jenkins, MEd.

Outside, children are already noticing, pointing, and reacting to the world around them. When adults respond, those moments become opportunities for conversation.

As Amy Schmidtke, Director of Educational Practice at the Buffett Early Childhood Institute, puts it: “These times really provide natural opportunities for conversation. It kind of takes the pressure off a little bit — these are moments when children are already interacting.”

Check out this new post for families, caregivers, and early childhood educators on how to make the most of some of your magical outdoor moments with children!

Crowley's Ridge Educational Service Cooperative supports early childhood work across northeast Arkansas. Their Local Leads help connect families to quality, affordable child care, support early childhood facilities, and make sure providers have a voice in decisions about curriculum, licensure, and safety.

Crowley's Ridge launched LENA Grow in 11 classrooms across two Arkansas districts!

And the results speak for themselves:
➡️Children starting with the least talk saw the biggest gains, averaging +6.7 turns per hour (71% growth).
➡️Teachers noticed too — 100% reported more confidence, job satisfaction, and family communication.

We are so excited to continue this partnership with Crowley's Ridge and see the impact they're making on the early childhood education community!

What does quality early childhood education actually look like — not on paper, but in practice?

That's the question at the heart of Every Interaction Counts, LENA's first-ever documentary short, created in partnership with Blue Magnolia Films. It follows Nancy Sylvester, Director & Owner of Global Connections Learning Center in Jackson, Mississippi, as she uses data to reshape her program's culture from the inside out — one conversational turn at a time.

We're inviting early childhood leaders, funders, and policymakers to an exclusive premiere screening, followed by a panel conversation on what it looks like to inspire a focus on quality in the classroom. Joining the discussion:

- Steve Hannon, President & CEO, LENA
- Todd Klunk, Senior Program Officer, W.K. Kellogg Foundation
- Nancy Sylvester, Director & Owner, Global Connections Learning Center
- The film producers from Blue Magnolia Films

We love this quote from Maisah! Outside, children are already curious. Ready to talk or already talking. Being there with them and responding to them, really being present, helps build and grow responsive relationships.

By third grade, we expect children to shift gears from learning to read to reading to learn. It’s a big jump, and it affects everything they do in school. That’s why what happens in those early years, from the first cuddles to the last day of second grade, is so pivotal.

Explore how third grade reading has connections to early childhood education and how early educators are an integral part of third grade reading success!
