We’re proud to see continued momentum in the 2026 U.S. News & World Report rankings, with notable gains and national recognition for graduates practicing in rural communities, primary care and health professional shortage areas.

“This recognition reflects the extraordinary commitment of our faculty, staff, learners and clinical partners who are working every day to improve the health of communities across Kentucky and beyond,” said Jeffrey Bumpous, dean of the School of Medicine. “We take great pride in preparing the next generation of physicians and scientists while remaining deeply connected to the communities we serve.”

As we close out Academic Medicine Week, we're proud to recognize the graduates of the Foundation in Academic Medicine program: an inspiring group of assistant professors and fellows committed to advancing the future of healthcare through education, research and patient care.

During our recent graduation celebration, graduates reflected on the relationships they built across departments, the lessons they gained through the program and their continued commitment to learning and professional growth.

Their journey reflects the very spirit of academic medicine: a dedication to developing knowledge, mentoring future generations and leading with purpose.

Congratulations to our graduates, and thank you to Dr. Chris Seals and Tomeka Shelton for their vision, leadership and commitment to supporting the next generation of academic medicine leaders.

A HRSA-supported initiative is helping expand access to medical education while addressing Kentucky’s critical rural physician shortage.

“Access amplified” showcases how strategic investment in training pathways is creating more opportunities for learners and more access to care for communities that need it most.

This is academic medicine in action: educating future physicians, advancing health equity and improving outcomes across the commonwealth.

What does academic medicine look like in action?

It looks like leaders who invest in future physicians, advocate for patients and help shape the future of healthcare.

This Academic Medicine Week, we're celebrating Dr. Sara Petruska, associate dean of admissions and professor in Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women's Health, on her selection to the prestigious Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) fellowship.

Through her work in admissions, education and patient care, Dr. Petruska is helping ensure the next generation of physicians is prepared to serve Kentucky and beyond.

Congratulations on this well-deserved selection!

During Academic Medicine Week, we're celebrating the physicians whose impact extends far beyond the exam room.

"Homegrown healing: A physician's return to serve" highlights Dr. Sarah Fisher, a University of Louisville School of Medicine graduate whose journey came full circle, returning home to care for the community that helped shape her future.

After years of training and growth, that decision to come home means patients gaining a trusted physician who understands their community, their challenges and their history.

A MESSAGE FROM DEAN JEFFREY BUMPOUS:

As we recognize the AAMC's Academic Medicine Week, I've been reflecting on one of the most important responsibilities we share as a medical school community: teaching the next generation of health professionals.

Every interaction with a student, resident, fellow or trainee is an opportunity to impart not only knowledge and technical skill, but also professionalism, compassion, accountability and purpose.

This month, as we celebrate Pride and Purpose, I am especially grateful to the faculty, staff and leaders who invest in our learners every day. Your commitment to teaching shapes the future of medicine, strengthens our communities and leaves a lasting impact on generations of healthcare professionals.

I invite you to read my full message on the importance of teaching accountability and why our educational mission remains central to who we are on our website.

Emergencies can happen anywhere, and we want our future physicians to be prepared no matter the geographical boundaries.

Our students and faculty are leaving Louisville to explore global communities — expanding what it means to learn, lead and serve in emergency medicine.

We might be biased...but we think the School of Medicine has some pretty incredible people.

The 2026 Presidential Excellence Awards seem to agree!

This year, School of Medicine faculty and staff earned an impressive share of UofL's highest employee honors, recognizing excellence in teaching, research, service, leadership and impact. From the classroom to the clinic to the laboratory, these award winners help make our school, and our university, stronger every day.

Congratulations to all of our honorees for showing what Pride and Purpose looks like in action!
