SPOTLIGHT: Alumnus Shawn Trail.

Bellarmine University Music Technology graduate Shawn Trail is an interdisciplinary Ph.D. research fellow with MISTIC (Music Intelligence and Sound Technology Interdisciplinary Collective) in the departments of computer science, electrical/mechanical engineering, and music at the University of Victoria. He is currently serving as the newly appointed director of performance and technology at OSU. Focusing on novel hyperinstruments and robotic music instruments, Trail's doctoral work involves HCI, DSP, physical computing and Music Information Retrieval.

He has been composer-in-residence with LEMUR (League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots) in Brooklyn, NY, a Fulbright Fellow at Medialogy in Copenhagen and twice invited as an artist-in-residence at STEIM (Studio for Electro-Instrumental Music in Amsterdam.) In 2010 he was the robotics technician for 20 time Grammy recipient Pat Metheny’s Orchestrion Tour and HD/3D Documentary, which featured a custom built robotic orchestra.

Most recently, Trail premiered three new works for percussion and robotics: Tactus featuring Trimpin's (MacArthur Fellow/musical robotics pioneer) robotic piano installation (CanonX+4:33=100); Mane Havn- for Notomoton and Pitched Percussion at New Interfaces for Musical Expression; and /////- for Wikembe and EMMI robotic instruments at Sound and Music Computing. His Wiikembe hyperinstrument was a nominee of the ’13 Guthman Hyperinstrument Contest. His work as a producer has been reviewed in the New York Times.

As a percussionist , Trail has toured Europe and North America performing at leading venues such as Lincoln Center in New York City. He has also conducted ethnomusicology research in Ghana West Africa on the Gyil Xylophone, traditional drumming, and Afropop. Trail’s multimedia performance works singularly revolve around minimal technologies and textural evolving polyrhythmic, melodic ostinati propelled by a sense of urgency intrinsic to specific cultural music rituals informed by ancient traditions.

THIS WEEK'S FEATURE: Alumnus Ian Thomas Spence.

Ian came to Bellarmine from Holy Cross High School in Covington, KY. As a Music Technology Major, Ian also studied Classical Guitar. He was active both as a private instructor and a player in the local rock scene. He also studied abroad in Salzburg, Austria and did extensive traveling during his time in Europe. He later received his M.F.A in Sound Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design where he also was awarded the Academic Achievement Award in Sound Design.

He just completed a professional internship at Walt Disney Imagineering in Orlando, Florida, in Audio Media Design. His responsibilities included maintaining and evaluating audio show quality standards and assembling and leveling background music and SFX (sound effects) for parks, resorts and attractions. He is also a guitar instructor at George's Music Inc.
