Sacred Heart Model School - Official Page

Sacred Heart Model School - Official Page Founded by the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville, SHMS has been the model of excellence Catholic education in Lou. since 1924.

We are a JK-8, IB school where students are challenged, supported, and empowered to grow in knowledge, character, and confidence. SHMS was originally named for its innovative approach as a model teaching environment utilized by students at Ursuline College. Aspiring educators and grade school students alike benefited from an approach that combined the latest in teaching pedagogy with the creative flexibility to determine our own best practices. This tradition of trailblazing, dating back to 1924, has continued in the decades since, perhaps most notably when SHMS became the first International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme in the state of Kentucky. Simply put, SHMS is still The Model in education in our community. SHMS continues to earn its reputation for academic excellence, while serving the spiritual, developmental, emotional, and social needs of all students entrusted to our care. Teachers and staff nurture the talents and gifts of each child in order to develop a comprehensive program for children from our aspiring Primary Years Programme (PYP) to our Middle Years Programme (MYP). Cloudy with a chance of...an "aha" moment! ☁️

Students applied their prior knowledge of clouds and precipitation to investigate how clouds become saturated with water and produce rain. 🌧️ Using a cotton ball as a model cloud, students enjoyed this hands-on investigation of the scientific process. They made connections between their model and how real clouds become saturated and produce precipitation. ☔️

Very proud of our Level 8 students for stepping out of their comfort zones to help with home repairs in Auxier, Kentucky. 🔨 🪚Helping with Hand in Hand's ministry in Appalachia is a SHMS tradition that allows our MYP students to directly engage with the Ursuline Core Values and see how a lot of hard work, grit, and sweat can make a big difference in someone's life. Thank you Hand in Hand!
