A single, double-sided stone in the Polk family plot is all that remains of Dr. Karl Langenbecker—a Prussian-born surgeon who immigrated to the South before the Civil War. After joining the 13th Louisiana Infantry Regiment, Langenbecker stayed behind in Perryville to care for wounded Confederate soldiers. When he fell ill, Dr. J.J. Polk brought him into his home, where Langenbecker tragically passed away on December 21, 1862, becoming another casualty of war. As a final act of respect, Polk laid him to rest in his own family plot at Hillcrest Cemetery.
