World War II was raging and Kenny enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving three and one-half years. When he left the USMC, he received an offer to play football at Western Kentucky University with his brother, Dallas.

Upon receiving his BA and MA degrees, he accepted a teaching and coaching position at Fern Creek High School. He remained at Fern Creek for 16 years, serving as both football and basketball coach and the last two years as Athletic Director. He was promoted to administrative duties with Jefferson County Public Schools, with responsibility for purchasing all furnishings for five new schools. He retired from JCPS as an Assistant Superintendent. His next position was with Central School Supply in sales and public relations.

Kenny was proud of his 20 years officiating during the KHSAA Sweet 16 Tournaments. He served an additional 20 years at the Tournament press table.

Kenny was a proud member of the Fern Creek High School Hall of Fame, Athletic Hall of Fame, and the Metro Area Athletic Directors’ High School Hall of Fame. The newest gymnasium at Fern Creek High School is dedicated and named the Kenneth L. Arnold Gymnasium.

After his retirement, he stayed busy volunteering in his community and for his church, Southeast Christian. He and Iris enjoyed several traveling adventures.

Of all his titles, after Dad, Kenny was most proud of being called Coach. He remained friendly with all his former plyers, who visited often. He cherished the company of family and friends. He leaves a legacy of integrity, kindness and love. He was an outstanding father, step-father, grandfather, and step-grandfather. He will be greatly missed by hundreds of folks.

Rita Jane Hughes, 71, of Louisville, Kentucky passed away on Tuesday, November 27, 2018 surrounded by her family.

She was born to the late Clyde Edward and Margaret (Roberts) Adam on March 15, 1947 in Ramsey, Indiana. She is survived by her two daughters, Gabrielle and Courtney (Brad Lawton), and her former husband and best friend, Milton Boes Hughes. Rita is also survived by her brother and sister, Clyde Edward “Eddie” Adam (Marla), and Rhonda Harmon (David), several nieces and nephews, four cats, two grand-cats, Annabelle and Anderson, and a grand-dog, Rue Cler --- all of whom she loved dearly and they her. She was preceded in death by her parents and her in-laws, Leighton Thomas and Shirley (Boes) Hughes.

Rita enjoyed working in her rain garden, spending time with her daughters, sewing garments, researching family ancestry, discussing politics – she was active in Mom’s Demand Action for Gun Sense in America -- and any HBO series, but especially Game of Thrones and Westworld, with like-minded friends and family. She had a relentless positivity combined with a sarcastic wit, which never left her, even when she was diagnosed with breast cancer 10-years ago. Rita loved to travel; in the 1970s and 80s she traveled with Milton all over the country to watch the UofL Cardinals basketball teams, and to Paris and New York City with her children. Rita loved music; she and her children saw David Bowie perform in Cleveland, as well as Bruce Springsteen in Louisville - twice! She instilled in her girls a love of the arts and intellectual pursuits. Rita always said the best decision she ever made was moving to Louisville, where, she met the man she would marry, they would raise their family, and her horizons would be broadened. That bravery, that strike-it-out-on-my-own mentality, translated to her girls; she always encouraged them to think for themselves, which resulted in one becoming an atheist and one a member of the Jewish faith. She assisted and took over the caregiving of her mother-in-law when she developed Dementia.

She wouldn’t say this of herself -- but her family and friends all know -- Rita was EXCEPTIONAL. She was selfless, encouraging, quick-witted, a great storyteller, talented, brave, and, an amazing mother. The world has lost one of its brightest lights. She will be missed dearly.

Memorial service is 3pm Sunday at Fern Creek Funeral Home, 5406 Bardstown Road. Visitation is after 12:00pm Sunday until the time of the service.

Marshall Lloyd Roberts lived 81 full, wonderful years and went to his heavenly home on Wednesday, May 10, 2017. He was a member of Fern Creek United Methodist Church for over 66 years, a 1956 graduate of Fern Creek High School, and retired from AT&T in 1985 with 25 years of service. Marshall was born on November 24, 1935, to Marshall Lee and Verna Louise (Jones) Roberts. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Alice Markwell (Bill); brothers, Joseph Barney (J.B.) and Freddie Lee Roberts; brother-in-law, William Markwell; and granddaughter, Jessalyn Diane Tabor.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Lenora Jones; daughters, Kim Roberts, Melissa Tabor (Scott), and Birte Westius (Dirk); son, Bryan Howay (Sharon); grandchildren, Judson Marshall Tabor, Travis and Ethan Howay, Clara Westius, and embraced as grandchildren, Ashley Lee (Jeff) and Leah Turner (Keith); sister-in-law, Patricia Roberts; brothers-in-law, Paul Jones, Jr. (Vicki) and Larry Jones (Janice); a multitude of beloved nephews, nieces, and friends; and his ‘babies,’ Baby and Hailey.

While at Fern Creek High School Marshall played baseball; he was a pitcher and started varsity as an eighth grader and held a strike-out record while there. He also played football where he was the Junior Varsity starting quarterback. He was honored by FCHS in October, 2001, by having the expanded football complex wing dedicated as the Marshall Roberts Wing of Champions, “in appreciation of his dedication, enthusiasm, hard work, and lifelong support of the football and athletic programs and the entire Fern Creek community.”

Through the years, Marshall coached both little league baseball and his daughters in softball. He helped start the Fern Creek Junior Baseball League, which played their games on the high school baseball field located behind the school, in part of the area where today the girls’ softball field is located. During his tenure as president of Fern Creek Junior Baseball (1967-May, 1971) the League outgrew the high school facility and with the hard work of coaches and parents, and in cooperation with the Metropolitan Parks Department, the League was moved to Fern Creek Park where it has continued to grow and become the Fern Creek Babe Ruth League. Field No. 5 has been named the Marshall Roberts field in his honor.

Marshall was a member of the Fern Creek Lions Club as long as his health allowed participation, and was active in the Senior Citizens group which met at the high school. He was the first Chairman of the Fern Creek High School Alumni Association, where in February, 1998, he was named to the first FCTHS Alumni Hall of Fame. In July, 1997, he was recognized by the Fern Creek Heritage Festival committee with a Leader Award for his “unique dedication, sacrifice and commitment to his community and its people.” Marshall was one of “The People” folks of Fern Creek featured in the Fern Creek Lore & Legacy, Volume II, published by the Fern Creek Women’s Club.

Besides his wife and daughters, the joys of his life included cheering on the athletes of his beloved Fern Creek Tigers and the U of L Cardinals. He followed the Fern Creek State Softball champs to the Softball World Series in New Hampshire and the Fern Creek basketball team to the 2017 State Sweet Sixteen in Rupp Arena.

Probably his most fitting tribute came from a graduating senior. As the 2003 Heisman scholar-athlete for FCTHS, he had to write an essay describing his idea of a “hero” in the community—and he picked Marshall. He fittingly described Marshall as having “...a smile on his face and a Fern Creek baseball hat fitted nicely around his snowy white hair.” Marshall had quite a collection of FCHS and U of L caps. That’s how you knew him when you saw him.

His funeral is 11am Tuesday at Fern Creek United Methodist Church, 6727 Bardstown Road with entombment in Resthaven Mausoleum. Visitation is 2-8pm Monday at Fern Creek Funeral Home, 5406 Bardstown Road and after 9:30am Tuesday until the time of the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fern Creek United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 91316, Louisville 40291, Fern Creek High School Athletics, or Fern Creek High School Alumni Association, 9115 Fern Creek Road, Louisville 40291.

Classmates of the 60's

For years, classmates who attended Fern Creek High School during the 1960's have said how much they enjoyed their class reunions. Many have said they would also like to see classmates from other years during the '60's.

Pat (Coffee) Fast, Class of '63, Carol (Magliato) Mantell, Class of '64, and myself, Paula (Williams) Schneider, Class of '65, want to make this event a reality. Plans are now underway to have a Class Reunion for the Classes of 1960 to 1969.

A date has been set for April 15, 2017. To make this special event a reality, a great amount of planning and help across the classes is required. We also are in need of money to begin the process.

We are asking for your help now. A reservation/attendance fee will be determined later, but in order to secure a location and contract with a caterer, and other costs, we must have resources. Our committee will do everything possible to keep costs to a minimum.

Please consider donating what you can to bring this event to reality. An account will be opened for The FCHS 60's Reunion, and there will be at least three people on the account who will oversee the receipts and expenses. If after the reunion is over and bills are paid, the committee will determine where any excess money will be spent. A donation to the FCHS Alumni Association is a possibility.

Paula Williams Schneider will be the designated committee member to receive any donations. Please mail your check to Paula at: 36 Sterling Road, Louisville, Kentucky, 40220, and make the check out to Fern Creek High School 60's Reunion.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at:[email protected] or Pat (Coffee) Fast at:[email protected].

Thank you so much for your interest and support and look forward to your help with the FCHS 60's Reunion.
