The Critical Cardinals Conversation Program was established to create safe spaces for the campus community campus to engage in authentic dialogue around diversity and inclusion. The program consists of various opportunities for conversations including training sessions, book clubs, and Let's Talk About It! sessions. Each program is facilitated by one of our trained UofL student, staff, or faculty member.

Our newest read for the book club is going to be Joy DeGruy's Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America's Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing.

"Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome (PTSS) lays the groundwork for understanding how the past has influenced the present, and opens up the discussion of how we can eliminate non-productive attitudes, beliefs and behaviors developed to cope and survive the traumatic periods of capture, transport, enslavement, Jim Crow and current day racial terrorism. The focus of the book is to learn and build upon the strengths we have gained from the past in order to heal from injuries both past and present"

If you are interested in joining us on our journey through Dr. DeGruy's seminal text, please visit our website to sign up by the end of the month!

Free, and open to everyone!

A Critical Moment 01/29/2022

A critical look at two countries with a dark past (US and Germany) teach about it.

The fight for “CRT” (read more broadly as inclusive curriculums), a look at similar controversy in the past, and much more.

Take a listen from 89.3 WFPL News Louisville and share your thoughts!

A Critical Moment WFPL News examines how the United States and Germany teach schoolchildren about the painful parts of their histories.

Your Mileage May Vary
--V. H. Weird Ink (they/them), 1.24.22

The road is long and the seats are comfortable, unless
someone is screaming in the front and there’s silence
in the back and in between
there is the weight of the world, so heavy
that you can’t breathe.

But usually there’s Kirk Franklin or
Earth Wind & Fire coming through the speakers;
that is the sound of your home and heritage
even though it feels like your extended family
disowned you before you were born,
like maybe they knew you’d come out to be nothing
like anything they’d expected or experienced before—
but you’ll learn in a few decades
that everything you need is in the lyrics
inscribed on your bones.

The way, the truth, the life are all found on the road
to hell, and a handbasket isn’t big enough
for the bathwater needed to wash a soul clean,
but baby you’ve always been extreme with your anxieties.
What destination is there other than to be here
in between the now and the not yet?

We’re not there yet and that’s okay.

Turn up the music and sing. Scream if you need to,
especially when loneliness is the middle seat
between you and your older sibling,
stacks of coloring books and melted crayons
and snack-wrappers that your father told you to throw away
three rest stops ago when you said you didn’t have to go
so now you have to hold it. It hurts
to hold on when you want to let go and it’s hard
to sleep when you’re not sure if the next stop
will be the police or a place to rest

When you finally get where you’re going
you’re welcomed with open arms.
To everyone’s horror
you hurl
because that’s what happens when you’ve been travelling
for three weeks through two countries
and you have no idea how to honor the stillness
that comes when the road ends.

Drum roll please!!!

Next week, June 21, 2021--we have our final installment of our "Becoming Antiracist" Community Conversation Series. This month's panel will include Shauntrice Martin (Black Market Kentucky), State Representative Attica Scott, Shameka L. Parrish-Wright (Mayoral Candidate and community organizer), and our very own Dr. Neeli Bendapudi! They will be discussing Failure, Success, and Survival through an antiracist lens, the work they are doing, and what we can all do together--this is not something you want to miss, so here are the details:

June 21st from 5-7PM on Zoom.
The event is free, but registration is required.
Register here: http://uoflalumni.org/BecomingAntiracist_June2021

In this series, we aim to move beyond conversations about racism and into antiracist action by building a shared understanding of what it means to be an antiracist and how to take appropriate action as both individuals and collectively in order to foster a more equitable and inclusive community. Conversation topics are based on Dr. Ibram X. Kendi's Bestselling text, "How To Be an Antiracist". Reading is not required for participation.

The "Becoming Antiracist" Community Conversation Series is collaborative effort between the Office of Diversity Education & Inclusive Excellence, Office of the President, Senior Associate Vice President for Diversity & Equity, and Louisville Alumni.
