Job Title: Communications Coordinator, the Backside Learning Center, Inc.
Reports To: Executive Director of the BLC
FLSA Status: Non-exempt, Full-time with full benefits package
The Backside Learning Center (BLC) is a 501c3 organization located on the backside of Churchill Downs, with
the mission of building community and enriching the lives of backside workers and families. The BLC provides
educational programming, social services and referrals to the nearly 1000 backside workers and their families.
The population served consists primarily of immigrants from various Latin American countries.
Summary of Position: The communications coordinator is a full-time position, responsible for the
organization’s communications and marketing efforts, including community outreach, donor relations,
volunteer recruitment as well as the organization, marketing and communications for special events, with the
goal of raising awareness of and support for the important role of equine workers in an industry so vital to our
community’s culture and economy. The position will work out of the BLC’s main office, located on the
backside of Churchill Downs race track.
Primary Responsibilities:
 Assist in all development activities, including grant writing, special events, awareness tours on the
backside
 Develop marketing strategies for events
 Donor relations
 Develop monthly newsletter
 Social media and website management
 Maintain database with donor, volunteer and student information
 Partnership development
 Volunteer recruitment, orientation and management
 Other duties as assigned
Education, Experience and Skills Required:
- Strong ability with technology and learning new systems; including ability to train others
- Excellent writing skills
- Microsoft Office and Google systems
- Social Media
- Excellent presentation skills
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in marketing, communications or related field
- Strong Commitment to the mission of the BLC
- Spanish speaking, reading and writing fluency strongly desired
- Strong interpersonal skills
-Experience working with diverse populations and cultures
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Communications and Marketing
 Work with BLC leadership to ensure clear and consistent messaging of the organization across platforms
 Develop and update all written materials used for marketing and outreach as needed
 Develop and manage all website, newsletter and social media content
 Marketing and outreach to new volunteers; initial orientation, placement and support
 Development of materials for outreach to program participants
 Organize and staff outreach and tabling opportunities for general awareness and promotion
 Documentation of programming at work (photo, video, etc.) to be used for promotional purposes
 Identification and engagement with community partners
Development and Fundraising
 Data entry and management of information dealing with both volunteers and donors
 Position will serve as a central figure in all BLC special events, including planning, organizing,
marketing, soliciting sponsorships and auction items, post-event follow up and management of
volunteers for events
 Coordination of direct mailings and other fundraising campaigns
 Responsible for donor relations, including support with identifying new corporate sponsors
*The position is based in a community center on the backside of Churchill Downs race track which receives
clients on a walk-in basis. Responsibilities will also include receiving walk-ins and providing direct assistance
as needed.
