At the end of May, NCFL President & CEO Dr. Felicia C. Smith joined fellow members of the National Action Commission on stage at the Institute for Educational Leadership’s national conference to consider how alignment across schools, families, and communities can drive transformation and systemic impact.

One key takeaway: that education systems can better serve families and communities when treat Pre-K-12 and adult learning as interconnected, and create opportunities for multigenerational learning to occur.

Last year, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Civic and Economic Literacy Survey found that 58% of participating adults failed a basic civics test—even as 74% of them reported confidence in their ability to explain how the U.S. government works.

⚖️ This gap between perceived and actual understanding underscores why civic literacy is essential.

NCFL's new guide, "Navigating the World: Incorporating Multiple Literacies through Family Literacy," offers concrete, ready-to-use strategies for embedding civic literacy (and other literacies!) directly into existing programs.

Even as AI reshapes work, STEM careers continue to be in high demand. NCFL wants to help families furthest from opportunity step into them—together.

Apply to be part of a national network reimagining STEM education through family learning. Three communities will receive seed grants up to $50,000 to pilot multigenerational pathways for grades 6–12 students and their parents.

Curious? Find the full RFP on our website, and attend our June 2 webinar for more information!
