Hi HiHo family!

We recently lost our nanny (due to her needing to focus on her health) and are looking to fill her position in our home full time (45 hours/ week). We have two girls (Evelyn, 2) and Isla (11 months). Our 2 year old Lightning Bug loves her time at HiHo on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. We live very close to Highland Pres. If anyone knows someone that would be interested, please reach out to me! 859.421.2756 or DM.

Many thanks,
Jaclyn

Hello all! We are so excited for the start of school in a couple of weeks. I am currently looking for a sitter/nanny to pick our kids up from school in the afternoons and stay with them until 5 when I finish work. I am striking out on Care.com. Does anyone have suggestions for other ways to connect with a sitter? I'm open to a college student or even a responsible high school student. Thanks!
Congratulations to the Highland Presbyterian Church Nursery and Weekday School for another great Derby Parade!
Proceeds from this raffle support the Douglass Community Center.
Music Teacher Martha McClellan Makela knows how important it is for children to feel seen by adults and their peers, and for children to learn to see one another. Martha has taken her years of professional experience and a rich music classroom setting, and adapted it to our school's commitment to class pods, restricted transitions, and being outdoors during the COVID pandemic. Meeting up with class pods during their long outdoor play periods, she draws children in by engaging children on their own playing turf with curiosity, adding music, words or song to their play, and gradually invites them to participate in a more formal group opportunity. Children don't need instructions. They tune right in, listening, and waiting to see one another and to have a turn to stand and be seen.
True it's just chalk, but this documentation is from one month of chalk explorations with no sign of stopping. We keep offering chalk to the children, and they keep coming up with ideas. They started with sidewalk chalk: simple but beautiful pattern drawing on bricks, tracing friends and shadows, drawing roads, arrows and parking lots for plasma cars, and then evolved into rich dramatic play with cardboard boxes. Kindergarten, which has been interested deconstructing materials used rocks to grind and pound chalk and added water to make paint. We added chalks with richer pigments (which stain -yes they do) and the children created paint invitations for other children to discover. The 3's and 4's used the watery paint they discovered for splatter painting. One class went right for the sensory experience of using the chalk on their own faces, hands, arms and legs. "My face is going to look so cool." "Look at my hand." "You should look at me when I'm done." This class repeats this activity over and over, and has begun using smooth rocks to rub the chalk lines on their legs and arms. Before going back inside, Cora covered her fully blued legs, offering, "I pulled my pants legs back down so no one can see my legs are blue underneath! Discovery, thinking, reasoning, cooperating, designing, engineering, and sharing is all part of play.
All-weather play at Highland Pres. Our Littles were busy outside this morning capturing rain in buckets from off the porch roof, listening to the "ka-plink", "ka-plunk" of raindrops hitting the bottoms of metal pails. They dumped and poured and funneled water from one container to another, and creek walked in the water, following the flow of rushing water. Some of our Two's watched Teacher Suzie Ziegenfuss clear a leaf clog from the gutter drain where the water was ponding, and waiting patiently for the "swirl", like a "big flusher". We watched the tall copper downspout on the side of the school overflowing and the water rushing down, so of course we had to sing "The Itsy Bitsty Spider!"That was a bit of a revelation for a number of us!

Three cheers for Toddler Teachers Linda McKinney, Melanie Robinson, Lee Ann Westfall and Karen Evanow, as well as Two's Teachers Dee Sheeran, April Farmer and Suzie Ziegenfuss, and Music Teacher Suzanne Bowman for donning their ponchos, slickers and bogs to get our littlest HiHo friends out for some good old singing and playing in the rain. Just think of all those brain neurons that were firing off new pathways and connections during this important play! Also, most important is great BIG thanks to our new friend and custodian Zack Smith for running all those shoes and clothes through the dryer!!

Hi HiHo Families!

Over the past couple of weeks, a few of our parents have come together in search of a way to uplift the Louisville community during this uncertain time. After speaking with the Norton Foundation, they came up with the plan to raise money in order to provide pastries and coffee to the doctors, nurses and support staff in the ER & ICU departments of the Norton Children's Hospital. With local businesses in mind, pastries and donuts will be provided by Plehn's and Coffee, by Heine Brothers.

Our goal is to raise $650 so we can serve both the day and night-time staff; fundraising will close on the evening of Sunday, May 10.

Childhood.

Photos from Highland Presbyterian Church Nursery and Weekday School's post 05/24/2022

Fun in the sun at the best place to learn and play! School! HiHo is where play is the work of children and how they learn best. Children come up with the plans, the rules, negotiate, cooperate, investigate, take risks, make decisions and learn from the consequences of their actions, and yes, they can change their clothes put wet clothes in their bags all by themselves.

The children have successfully dammed the creek. This is one of those problems where teachers pause: “Hmmm. How do we celebrate the ingenuity and save the playground from a big flood?” Happy problems.

It was a “dramatic” day in Kindergarten. Eye exams were given, glasses made, broken bones fixed, babies were born, medical school classes taught, rockets, robots, and tiny houses designed and built, love letters to friends written, and a story written and acted out by the whole class!

We practice and prepare for the unexpected, and yesterday we had both a morning of rainy outdoor play followed by a fire alarm right before noon carpool. All is well. The children and teachers are champions of calm and flexibility. Many clothes were laundered.

Enrolling for fall 2019!

Classes for fall are filling up. Most are full, but we do have room for toddlers and Kindergartners (half or full day). If you or someone you know are interested, have them send an application via our website! If you’re interested in another age group, send in an application as we often have changes over the summer.
