Meet Ashly Roman-Cano, a freshman from Goshen, Kentucky! 👋

A current business administration major and sport administration minor, Ashly is a University Honors Program student and an active member of the Student Organization for Alumni Relations (SOAR). Ashley is also involved in READY Mentoring and works as an intern for the University of Louisville's football recruiting office.

"I chose the University of Louisville because I wanted to go to a school that had a welcoming community, had exciting sports teams, and was not too far from home, and UofL offered all three of those things! When I first visited UofL, I met many welcoming faces through admissions and tours, and each time I visited campus as a prospective student, each individual I came across with made sure that my questions were answered before I left campus. Additionally, the academics at UofL are challenging, yet rewarding, and I quickly have become a part of many wonderful programs during my time here as a freshman that have helped me grow and expand my skillset for what I would like to do next post-college."

“The things I love most about Louisville are the people and our community. When I first moved here, I was easily able to find a community that supports me through all. Here at the university, the faculty, staff and fellow students uplift and create a support system that all students can thrive in. The city of Louisville and the university have made me into the Cardinal that I am today. Go Cards!”

– Allie Rose Phillips, UofL Student Government Association President

💫Graphic design student James Jean-Marie had the opportunity to create and present a full branding package for a hotel as one of three agency-developed creative options for the client to review.

The hotel chose his designs – as an intern – giving him a win for his resume and the satisfaction of knowing it was a job well done.

“That was exhilarating,” he said.

Now completing his second agency internship as a senior in his final semester at Hite Institute of Art + Design, his sights are set on a career focused on web design.

Completing two advertising agency internships, the first at An Agency based in Louisville, and now a remote internship at Cornett, based in Lexington, has given James the chance to explore what he likes or dislikes in the career of his choice. Through these internships, he has experienced working at an agency that has 8-10 employees, and another with around 50 employees. He’s also had the chance to work for a wide variety of clients, including a coffee chain, a metal recycling company, a business that creates gymnasium seating, and more. Experiential learning has been key to his growth as a graphic designer, and he is now considering job options for his life after graduation this May.

To celebrate the beginning of the spring semester today, we have a new story to share!

Public history graduate student Hannah White is unearthing and preserving the legacy of Charles Wickliffe Beckham, the first Kentuckian to achieve a national reputation as an ornithologist, while also discovering his connection to state politics.

White, who is in the second year of the master’s program in public history, is conducting the research as part of a collaboration between the history and biology departments. Biology is also seeking a permanent home for the Beckham ornithological collection, which consists of over 2,500 birds.

"The biology department needed someone who could contextualize Beckham’s life and the collection itself, and then find an eventual home for it,” White said. “I've been able to use my public history skills in a lot of different ways because it's been very independent, self-led research. I started with some archival research looking at Beckham’s publications because he did publicize a lot of his work.”
