Dear Friends and Family of the University of Louisville Department of Chemistry,

There is nothing A collage of a person speaking in front of a group of people

Description automatically generatedbetter than horse racing and chemistry, so we have been combining them in the Department of Chemistry for many years with our Derby Lecture Series. Our Chemistry Graduate Student Association (CGSA) invites a prominent speaker (usually a Nobel Laureate) to visit the University of Louisville. The speaker presents two lectures and attends the Kentucky Derby with the CGSA. We also have a banquet dinner and picnic during the speaker’s visit. The event has been generously sponsored by Clariant Corporation for many years and more recently by Michelin and Allnex also. The picture shows the 2022 speaker, M. Stanley Whittingham, who won the Nobel Prize in 2019 for his work on the design and development of lithium-ion batteries. The picture to the left shows Professor Whittingham at the banquet with CGSA members holding his gift of a personalized Louisville Slugger bat. The picture to the right shows all of us at the picnic at GB Hammond’s farmhouse.

The Chemistry Gift Fund is used to support the CGSA and events like these, which are vital to the education and inspiration of our graduate students. We ask for your support of the CGSA in one of the following ways:

Here is another email to send. We are at 47 donations. Less than 5 hours left. The College of A&S needs 54 more donations to reach their goal. Let’s help them get there and see if we can get Chemistry close to 100 donations. Thank you!

Dear Friends and Family of the University of Louisville Department of Chemistry,

Did you know that faculty in the Department of Chemistry do not just teach students A group of people wearing goggles

Description automatically generatedenrolled at UofL? They also engage with local high school students within the community in outreach activities. Professors Wilson and Balabanoff have been working with students at Fairdale High School (see picture). The goal is to create a Near Peer network between high school students and current UofL Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) students to expose high school students to research and STEM before college, which will increase their likelihood of majoring in STEM. Activities include a metal nanoparticle synthesis and spectroscopy lab, a UofL poster session given by high school students, and participation in a high school student science fair. As a public university, it is our obligation to provide education to the community and promote chemistry and science to young students through outreach activities. This can ultimately lead to a well-trained, technically skilled work force to grow and support tech companies within the region.

Consider supporting the Department of Chemistry so we can better provide education and outreach to our community. We ask for your help in one of the following ways:

Only about 10 more hours left in “Raise Some L”. We only have 33 donations, so let’s try to pick up the pace. With 280 people spreading the word we can do better than that. Please continue to help spread the word. Keep sending emails. Let your friends and family know what is going on in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Louisville. Some may be inspired and want to donate to a program that is important to you. If you feel bad contacting people blame your Chair. Try to contact 5-10 people each and let’s see what happens. Thank you for helping out with this campaign.

Dear Friends and Family of the University of Louisville Department of Chemistry,

During the last two years the officers of the Society of Undergraduate Chemistry Students held a liquid nitrogen ice cream social event in the Belknap Academic Building during Freshman welcome week. Liquid nitrogen was used to create ice cream on the spot while demonstrating the concepts of nucleation and growth of crystals. It was a yummy way to learn about chemistry and was very well attended. Students were lined up all the ways down a few flights of stairs. The society holds events like this throughout the year. Membership to the Society of Undergraduate Chemistry Students is open to all majors. The only requirement is to have an interest in chemistry. Their mission is to promote the well-being of chemistry students and foster a greater love for chemistry in the UofL community.

The Chemistry Gift Fund is used to support many of the events held by the Society of Undergraduate Chemistry Students. We ask your support of the Society in one of the following ways:

Here is another email to send out and post on social media. We have 40 donations and close to $2000. Let’s keep it going. 7.5 more hours. The College of A&S needs 79 more donations to unlock $2500. Our donations can help them get there. Thank you for all your help during this campaign.

Dear Friends and Family of the University of Louisville Department of Chemistry,

Every year in Spring the Department of Chemistry works with the Society of Undergraduate Chemistry Students to hold the Senior Awards Banquet. We honor all the seniors graduating, announce awards, give out other awards, and give time for senior reflections. Food and drinks are served and we also enjoy social time one more time with our graduating seniors. It is sad to see them go but exciting to see what is next for them. Our most recent class of students went on to medical school, dental school, pharmacy school, chemistry or biochemistry graduate school and industry. We are very proud of their accomplishments.

The Chemistry Gift Fund is used to help support this event and many others held by the Society of Undergraduate Chemistry Students to support our students and bring the department together. We ask for your help in one of the following ways:

1. Support through a gift. Follow the directions below.
