Louisville's "can opener" viaduct at Third Street and Eastern Parkway is no stranger to semi-truck collisions, but the I-65 closure has pushed things to a new level. To help make sense of it all, civil & environmental engineering faculty member Brandon Shelley breaks down the engineering and policy challenges behind one of the city's most persistent infrastructure problems:
Speed School Can Opener »
Tucked at the intersection of Third Street and Eastern Parkway, just steps from the Vogt Building on Speed School’s campus, sits one of Louisville’s most notorious spectacles. The Third Street viaduct, a railroad bridge owned by CSX and Norfolk Southern, carries trains overhead while allowing ve...

Happy Plant Something Day!
This spring holiday has us thinking back to the meaningful work our students do beyond the classroom. December 2024 Commencement Banner Bearer Weston Young and fellow graduate students in Prof. Tyler Mahoney's Watershed Erosion and Sediment Transport course got their hands dirty for a great cause, planting sycamore trees and red maple saplings along Beargrass Creek. Both in and beyond the classroom, Speed School engineers are putting their skills to work for our community and our environment.

For many college students, summer means a well-earned break. For Speed School students, it means staying in the game.
Tomorrow marks the beginning of Week 2 of the Summer semester, and our students are doing what they always do: putting in the work, whether that's inside the classroom or out on co-op building hands-on experience in their field.

This May, we're honoring National Inventors Month by shining a spotlight on the innovation happening right here at Speed School. The Speed Center for Innovation (SCI) provides our students with access to sophisticated machinery and a hands-on environment that transforms classroom concepts into tangible creations. The inventor's mindset is alive and well at Speed School!

Congratulations to our Speed School students who were inducted into the Order of the Engineer! By taking the oath and receiving their rings, they have joined a tradition dedicated to bridging the gap between education and experience, and to representing the engineering profession with integrity.
This is just the beginning of a remarkable journey, and we are honored to have witnessed it.
