Baby Scientists Wanted! We are currently looking for infants 3-8 months old for our studies on infant play, sitting and face perception, and emotions.

We are currently conducting studies on infant play, sitting and face perception, and emotion perception (see below for more details). Infants between 3 and 8 months of age with normal vision and hearing are invited to participate. Participation involves one brief visit to campus. Principal Investigator: Cara H. Cashon, Ph.D. Play and Causality Study:

The age range for this study is 3.5 - 5.2 months. This is a dissertation project of one of our graduate students. We are interested in how infants learn about causal and non-causal events (think basic physics stuff...if a ball rolls and hits another ball the second ball should start rolling). Participating takes about an hour of your time and involves a short 5-10 minute "sticky mittens" play session with your baby (play session with velcro mittens and velcro balls), the baby watching a 5-10 minute video of toys moving while we record how long the baby looks, and then a parent filling out a questionnaire. Sitting and Faces Study:

The age range for this study is 4 - 8 months. This study is an ongoing study in our lab that looks at how infants learn about faces at different ages and how sitting ability affects this learning. Total this will take about half an hour of your time. It will involve a quick assessment of your baby's sitting ability (just a way to measure how well your child is sitting on his or her own) and, following that, the baby will watch a 5-10 minute video of pictures of faces while we record where and how long the baby looks. At the end, you will fill out a short questionnaire. Emotion Study:

The age range for this study is 4.5 - 5.5 months. This study is an ongoing study in our lab and investigates how infants see facial expressions. This study will take about an hour of your time. It involves a 5-minute play session where you will play with your baby in our play room. The baby will also watch a brief video in our eye-tracking room. The video is just a presentation of faces. Afterwards you will fill out a few short surveys.

This semester we welcomed two new undergraduate research assistants, Ashley Coulter and Olivia Richards!

Below are their short bios -

From Ashley:

My name is Ashley Coulter, and I am a junior Psychology major, with minors in Creative Writing and Sociocultural Anthropology. After undergrad, I plan on getting my PhD in Developmental Psychology, with a focus on younger children. In my free time, I enjoy hanging out with my friends, reading, writing, and going to the gym.

From Olivia:

My name is Olivia Richards and I am a sophomore Psychology major. After I complete my undergrad, I hope to take a year to travel and get some work experience before going back to school for a PsyD in clinical psychology. I am very interested in child and adolescent development and mental health and hope to specialize in this, and maybe one day have my own practice. I love going to concerts, exploring new cities, going to the gym, and hanging out with my bunny, Crunch!

Meet Kaelin Kinney, our newest graduate student!
Kaelin joined our lab in August of this year and we are so glad to have her! Kaelin's current research interests include infant cognition and developmental disabilities. In her free time, she loves practicing agility with her dog (Cupcake, pictured here!), cuddling with her cats, hiking, and spending time with family.
