Happy Arbor Day!

A few weeks ago, Dr. Bulinski, Natalie Cousin (Assistant Dean of Student Recruitment), Andrew Cobbs (Environmental Studies minor) and Hannah Mattingly (Environmental Science major) staffed a table at the Louisville Tree Fest to celebrate our commitment to expanding and enhancing our tree canopy. We have now been a Tree Campus USA for twelve consecutive years!

Happy Earth Day--and Happy Last Day of CLASSES! We're excited about all the momentum we've gained in the 2025-2026 academic year. From our continuation with the Bee Campus and Tree Campus USA certifications, and our new AASHE Stars rating, we've been doing a lot of planning and a lot of building towards a more sustainable campus and more sustainable culture at Bellarmine. Just last week, an article came out about our new commitment to Laudato Si' through our certification through the Laudato Si' Action Platform.

More exciting things are ahead in 2026-2027!

ENVS 320: Environmental Geology and ENVS 410: Environmental Law and Policy went on a wonderful field trip to Appalachia a few weekends ago. We met with staff from the Division of Abandoned Mined Lands and went to see locations impacted by acid mine drainage and the legacy of coal mining, saw the future site of the Lewis Ridge pumped hydro storage project, went to Cumberland Gap and heard about the geologic evidence of a ~300 million year old meteorite crater, went hiking at Bad Branch Nature Preserve with Kentucky Natural Lands Trust, visited a high ground housing project from and of course, stopped by Miguel's Pizza on the way back.

Tire pollution is a serious problem for rivers and streams in Kentucky. Currently, there is no system in place to track where waste tires accumulate in or near waterways. Kentucky Waterways Alliance's Green River Tire and Access Identification project aims to change that by creating digital maps and tools that can help KWA and partners track tires, plan cleanups, and improve public access to the waterways, including the best access points for waste tire removal. KWA needs your help collecting information about tire pollution. If you see a tire in or near a lake, stream, or river, report it using our free and easy Tire Reporting Tool!
