Please join the Department of Mathematics for the Prasanna K. Sahoo Memorial in honor of Professor Prasanna (Ron) Sahoo who sadly passed away in June 2017. We will celebrate Dr. Sahoo’s work and legacy on Friday August 25, 2017 with a reception in the President’s Room at the University Club at 3 PM. Remarks on Dr. Sahoo’s contribution will begin at 3:30 PM, with Dr. Beth Boehm, Vice Provost for Graduate Affairs and Dean of the School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies, Dr. Kimberly Kempf-Leonard, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Enid Trucios-Haynes, Faculty Senate Chair, as well as members of the Department of Mathematics, colleagues and friends.
Prior to the reception, there will be a Mathematics Colloquium with Professor Henrik Stetkær of Aarhus University, Denmark who will speak on “Trigonometric Identities on Groups”, an area of research to which Dr. Sahoo also made significant contributions. The talk will be Friday August 25 at 1:30 pm, in NS 212C.

Prasanna K. Sahoo

The Department of Mathematics mourns the untimely passing of our colleague, mentor and friend Ron Sahoo on June 18, 2017.
Before joining the Department in 1987, Ron had obtained Master’s degrees in Population Studies from Jawaharlal Neru University and in Mathematics from the University of Regina and his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Waterloo in 1986. Ron was a gifted teacher and highly productive researcher with 5 books and nearly 200 published papers. Much of his work focused on Functional Equations but he also made significant contributions to Probability and Statistics as well as Image Processing, which led to an associate appointment in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Ron won several prizes for his work, most notably the Hind Rattan Award by NRI Welfare Society of India in 2015.
Ron’s presence will be greatly missed and we send our condolences to his wife Dr. Sadhna Gupta, RN and his son Amit Aaron Sahoo.

UofL's Department of Mathematics graduate program ranks No. 4 for 2016 student ratings, according to graduateprograms.com. The program was given an average rating of 4.6 out of 5, behind only Brown, Stanford and University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
