๐FACT CHECK - Music Education| Weโve heard some questions circulating about changes to our districtโs music programs, and we want to set the record straight. Music education at JCPS has never been stronger, and weโre creating a more comprehensive music program across all schools in JCPS.
Starting in the 2025-2026 school year, weโre adjusting how we allocate resources for elementary instrumental music and secondary orchestra to ensure that every school has equal access to these important programs.
In the past, some middle and high schools did not have the opportunity to offer orchestra. With this new plan, every middle and high school will have the opportunity to provide orchestra for their students. As always, principals make programmatic and staffing decisions based on their student needs and the local site based decision making council.
Weโre also making sure that all elementary students have consistent, age-appropriate instrumental music instruction by adding more teaching positions. Previously, there were multiple elementary schools without consistent access to music instruction. Now all elementary schools will have the opportunity to have a certified instrumental music teacher support them at least once a week, if not more. This is in addition to schools that have chosen to have a full time General Music position.
Hereโs what you need to know:
๐น No layoffs are happening due to these changes.
๐น Principals and local site based decision making councils will still make staffing decisions based on the needs of their schools.
๐น We are expanding access to instrumental music for all students, with more teaching positions added at the elementary school level.
๐น The JCTA contractual process is being followed with teachers choosing placements by seniority โ there are no changes to this process.
We hope this clears up any confusion. Weโre committed to providing well-rounded educational opportunities for all of our students.
