West End School

West End School All WES students attend on scholarships. We operate on donations, grants, and amazing volunteers.

WES opened its doors in 2005 because of the growing need for alternative forms of education, particularly for the young men in our community. For many of these students, elementary and middle school years are a transitional 'tipping point' both socially and academically. Boys especially are at higher risk for almost every index of failure: academic, achievement, truancy, dropout rates, school suspensions and expulsions, delinquency, and incarceration. West End School strives to address all of these issues by creating for its students a culture of high expectations, integrity, and responsibility. Through the School's rigorous academic & personal standards, we encourage our students to attain the highest possible level of scholarship, intellectual growth, and character. When these standards are in place, it is remarkable the progress students make. Our graduates have been offered more than $2 million in scholarships to many of the top high schools and colleges in the state. There is no charge for tuition, and all expenses are paid through donations from individuals, foundations, and corporations.

The Future Starts Now!

We are incredibly proud of our West End School scholars for starting early and thinking intentionally about their futures in higher education!

Our middle schoolers had the opportunity to explore colleges and universities, speak directly with representatives, ask questions, and begin discovering the many possibilities available to them after high school.

At WES, we believe college and career readiness doesn’t begin during senior year. Exposure matters, conversations matter, and starting early matters. Experiences like these help our scholars understand that higher education is not some distant idea. It is a goal they can begin preparing for today.

We’re proud to see our young men exploring their options, asking questions, and already thinking about where their education can take them.

Each book gives a scholar the opportunity to discover a new author, explore a different perspective, or find a lasting love of reading.

"I Can Be" Wednesday 💜💛

Our scholars spent time with Ms. Lawanda Page, who leads Global Community Relations for Brown-Forman Corporation. She shared who she is, what she does, and how her work has taken her around the world to see places and experience things she once could only imagine.

For a scholar sitting in that room, hearing her story makes the world feel a little bigger and a lot more reachable.

Last week, our teachers were hard at work getting scholars ready for MAP Growth testing. That meant going over test taking strategies, walking through the MAP testing tools, working through practice tests in reading and math, and practicing positive self talk and perseverance along the way.

It's not just about knowing the material. It's about walking into test day feeling calm, confident, and prepared. That's the kind of support our scholars can count on every day at WES.

We are incredibly proud of our West End School alumni Jawante Britt, Markell Blackburn, and Elijah Buckner, for taking the time to give back and pour into our current WES 2nd graders!

One of the greatest parts of the WES community is seeing our former students return to encourage, support, and serve the young men coming behind them. This is what brotherhood and leadership look like!

A heartfelt thank you to the volunteers from Broadway Baptist Church, who spent a few hours last weekend organizing and getting our staff lounge in working condition. Our teachers give so much of themselves to our scholars every day, and this newly organized space gives them a place to take a second to breathe. We are grateful for the time, effort, and care this team brought to our campus.
