The 5th & final Pillar of Reading: Comprehension 🧠📖

Comprehension is what allows readers to make meaning from text. It's more than simply decoding, it's understanding, connecting, questioning, and thinking about what you've read!

First week of programming ✅

This week, Decode Project opened our doors for literacy instruction! Decode is so excited to see where summer takes us, and is so proud of our mentors and Decoders for all their hard work! 📖

JCPS Food Works is offering free breakfast and lunches through the summer for ages 18 and younger on Mondays-Thursdays. Come to our space at City Life between 11:20-11:40 to grab some food! Look out for the white van parked in front 👀☀️

For pillar 4, we’re learning about vocabulary 🏛️📕

Vocabulary is a cornerstone in becoming a successful reader, as it allows us to understand the meaning and context behind words! In this post, Decode provides an in-depth explanation of various kinds of vocabulary, and how we incorporate them into our structured literacy program!

At Decode, we heavily emphasize using evidence-based instruction. By including these pillars into our sessions, we foster confident and independent readers. ✨📚

For pillar 3, we’re talking about fluency! 📚

Fluency is the bridge between word recognition and reading comprehension. By working with our Decoders on their fluency, we give them the necessary tools to become independent readers!

For Pillar #2 of our reading journey, we’re talking about Phonics.

Phonics bridges the gap between hearing a sound and seeing it written down. By teaching children how letters and sounds link together, we give them the keys to decode any word they come across—not just the ones they’ve memorized.
