“Why is Black History Month important to you and the country?”

SGA visited ’s Black History Month kick-off to ask students about what Black History Month meant to them!

Black History Month was started in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History as Negro History Week. It took place during the second week of February to honor the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Negro History Week expanded across cities and the country and became Black History Month by the late 1960s! The month was officially recognized by President Gerald Ford in 1976.

As our amazing fellow Cards said, Black History Month is a time to recognize, learn about, and celebrate the history of Black culture in the United States and beyond, while also advocating for change and equality in the future!

Happy Black History Month, Cards! ❤️🖤💚
