Governor Andy Beshear has declared September fourth Kentucky blood donation day! With that, I wanted to take the opportunity to post some of my favorite photos of the American Red Cross from my collection.
The ARC served a vital role in soldier care during WW2. Whether it was supplying troops with clothing, letters, etc. or by providing general support at home and away.
I’d also like to take this time to encourage to go donate blood! It cost nothing but a few moments of your time. And with this simple act you’ll save countless lives.

The Alcatraz East crime Museum located in pigeon Forge, Tennessee, has a fascinating collection of artifacts relating to crime & criminal activity. These artifacts have a fascinating range of character.
From medieval punishments to the old west, to mobsters and serial killers, to hate crimes and domestic terrorism. It is a magnificent collection of artifacts relating to crime, mostly in the United States.
Among the artifacts shown in this post are John Wayne Gacy’s actual clown suit, Jeffrey Dahmer’s glasses, Charles Manson’s guitar, Ted Bundy’s VW bug and more.

Support from home to war
During WW2, many well known and unknown companies converted their manufacturing processes to support the war effort. Some of these, such as ford and dodge made automobiles. Others, such as Re*****on Rand, a typewriter company made handguns. Here at home in Louisville things were no different. My 2nd great grandfather worked for the Murphy elevator company, they converted to making tracks for Sherman tanks. But one well known company, often does not get talked about.
Hillerich and bradsby Co. Or H&B, the makers of the famous Louisville slugger baseball bats, converted to making M1 Carbine stocks. These stocks are quite rare to come by today. However you do see them occasionally. This example so wonderfully provided by my place of employment (shout outs to the slugger museum) is a very beautiful, and well crafted stock. Just like our bats are! (Shameless plug)
H&B primarily made stocks for Inland carbines. They are marked HI or I-HB.
If you’d like to see this stock for yourself, it is on display at the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory here in Louisville.

US Army Air Corps , Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Irving P. Krick
One of the leading meteorologists for the US weather forecasting team leading up to D-Day.
He is depicted in “pressure“ (2026 film) which depicts this group of individuals leading up to D-Day.
Why am I showing you this man in particular? Well, he was a Fellow Frater in Tau Kappa Epsilon. My fraternity.
He attended Caltech.

Memorial Day is a day to remember and honor those who have laid down their lives for our country. In just 250 years over 650,000 men and women have paid the ultimate sacrifice so that you and I may stand as we are today, free in a nation united as one.

Today, I am showcasing my impression of a Pvt. in the 38th IN infantry on the Atlanta campaign in 1864.
The 38th is a very special unit to me, beyond that they are quite storied having fought at several major engagements such as Perryville & stones River.

Uniforms
Early on in the war based on photographs you see alot of M1858 dress (frock) coats used alongside issued forage caps. I can tell you for 100% sure they were also issued M1858 fatigue blouses (sack coats) as well based on records. By mid 1873 they are pretty much exclusively issued fatigue blouses and you see alot more civilian style slouch hats and issue Hardee hats.
Undershirts likely by this point would haw been federal issue shirts. How we Vivian shirts are entirely possible.

Arms & equipment
Standard federal leathers. By this point in the war you won’t see as many knapsacks being used so I’ve elected to use a blanket roll. By mid 1862 the unit had been issued “modern” weapons mostly P1853 Enfield ri**es muskets & M1854 Austrian Lorenz ri**es.

Footwear is one I’ve struggled with. I’ve elected to use brogans style shoes however I do believe infantry boots were used as well.

As I stated, the 38th is a very special unit to me and one I have done EXTENSIVE research into. As I continue to improve on this impression I will update you all accordingly.

This is the kit I carried on the field at D-day Conneaut this year. Minus my dummy gr***de as I lost it in the battle… Fs in the chat gents. But this is everything is else.
This layout shows what a private in the 115th IR of the 29th ID would’ve carried on 6, June, 1944.
Uniform:
M1941 field jacket
M1937 wool shirt
M1937 wool trousers
Open face style trouser belt (original buckle hehe)
Type 2 service shoes
A frame style under shirt (not pictured)

U.S. R***e Cal .30 M1 (M1 Garand) chambered in .30-06. Mine is a SA 1944 dated r***e
M1 Helmet
M1923 cartridge belt loaded with .30-06 blanks (80rds)

M1928 haversack
M1926 life preserver belt
M7 rubberized gas mask bag
GP (general purpose) bag
2x cloth bandoliers loaded with .30-06 blanks (96rds total)
Airborne first aid packet

Cigarette box
Dog tags (not pictured)

This was the standard kit for US troops in the 29th landing on D-day. It all has its flaws but it’s what they had.
