Groundbreaking research from the University of Louisville School of Medicine and Norton Children's is transforming neonatal care for newborns exposed to opioids.
Our team has been working for years on the study that now shows individualized treatment for babies experiencing opioid withdrawal can speed recovery and reduce the amount of time they spend in the hospital.
The work, led by UofL professor and neonatologist Lori Devlin, M.D., was recently published in JAMA. It builds on more than a decade of research focused on improving care for infants with neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS).
Nearly two dozen hospitals across the country participated in the study, including the neonatal intensive care units at Norton Children’s Hospital, Norton Women’s and Children’s Hospital, and UofL Health.
UofL faculty members Sucheta Telang, Scott Duncan and Ryan Smith were co-authors on the publication.

The nationally recognized The Louisville Twin Study at UofL, one of the largest and longest-running twin studies exploring development and aging in the U.S. has secured a new $11 million NIH National Institute on Aging grant.
This funding will build on the last five years of work allowing advanced brain imaging of participants. The results will help researchers examine the connections among early-life factors, current health and future cognitive outcomes.
