Big day for my heart. Losing Wendell and Dolly in the same short span did a number on us all. Their work was instrumental in helping me navigate some very difficult seasons. When I saw a post that Merlin Tuttle would be at Mammoth Cave today, I couldn't miss it.
The Secret Life of Bats is a book that brought me hope when it was in short supply.

Wendell Berry, American writer and esteemed Kentuckian has left us at 92.

This hurts, but as much as it hurts we have to believe that these greats are making room for the next generation to speak, defend, and shine.

Pictured also is his poem The Peace of Wild Things that moved me so deeply I had to have it in the largest possible format before me every day, so I put it to canvas.

I often wonder about the nature of the people who destroy. Not those who order the destruction, but those who commit the actual acts. Those who are choosing to pick up guns, batons, rubber bullets, shovels, bulldozer keys...

🧊 agents are notable for their callousness, their violence, and their willingness and apparent joy at the opportunity to commit heinous acts against other human beings. We know them for their behavior. We call them out in real time.

But what of those driving the bulldozers through national parks and indigenous lands? The clear cutters? The oil pipe layers? The data center builders? What is their nature? Are they as gleeful? Are they trying to get by like the rest of us? Where are their faces? The machines drive on someone's directive.

How culpable are we in promoting an economic system that neuters men's conscious in favor of their livelihood? Surely it must be by someone's design. I suspect we are all to blame despite our horror.

What I do know is that even as America is being systemically destroyed on every possible level, there are opportunities for real change instead of allowing the lords of commerce to slink back to their bunkers. Vote in November for those who would radically change things instead of just maintaining the historic baseline. That path will always lead us here.
