“What happens when you stop assuming…and start seeing?” That was the question at the heart of today’s Upper School Inclusive Leadership assembly with Mr. Racine during X-Period.

Mr. Racine opened the talk with a violin performance designed to challenge expectations and get students thinking about first impressions—and the stories our minds immediately create based on what we see and hear.

From there, students explored stereotypes, identity, belonging, and the assumptions we make about the people around us. Because leadership isn’t just about having a title. Great leaders see people, stay curious, question assumptions, and make room for others to belong. See. Question. Act. That’s inclusive leadership 💙💛

Congratulations to KCD senior Matthew Odom, who was named a 2027 National Merit Commended Scholar!

Commended students are recognized for their exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the PSAT. Matthew placed among the top 50,000 students nationwide who entered the 2027 competition by taking the PSAT last fall.

This morning, our Junior Kindergartners celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month through a special cultural activity! Students gathered in the Commons to hear from KCD kitchen team member Mari, as she shared her family traditions and brought sweet treats to try: arroz con leche and gata de canela. Mari also prepared a special surprise by decorating a section of the Commons for the JKers to enjoy! Students had the opportunity to learn, celebrate, and make memories together—including helping pull the string on a piñata. We are so grateful to Mari for sharing her time, traditions, and talents with our students!

One of the Upper School’s newest electives, Old School P.E., is reintroducing students to the joy of movement! Bearcats are loving this class, which blends traditional team sports with nostalgic P.E. classics such as floor hockey, battleball, basketball, and more.

Designed as an inclusive, high-energy space where students can decompress, compete, and stay fit together, Coach Kruer’s goal is to keep the class student-centered: “My main goal is to give students a healthy physical break from their academic workload, keep them consistently active, and build connections across grade levels through play.”

We are overwhelmed by the tremendous generosity of our KCD community! 🧭✨ 457 Bearcat Explorers made gifts totaling $337,610—the highest dollar amount raised during our fall campaign launch in recent school history. Our upper school French students had an exciting opportunity this afternoon to connect with special guests from Lou City FC! Players Amadou Dia, Quenzi Huerman, and Babacar Niang joined us for conversations centered on sports and culture! 🇫🇷⚽️

The visit began with Ms. Nichols’s French I and Ms. Brooks’s advanced French classes, where students asked questions in English about sports and cultural experiences. The conversation then continued with Ms. Nichols’s AP French students, who put their language skills into practice through meaningful discussions about the role of sports in Francophone communities and the athletes’ daily routines.

What a great opportunity for our students to connect their world language learning to real-world experiences!

A round of applause for Ms. McCarthy’s 5th-grade classes, who presented their summer book reports to their classmates this week! 📚📖

Over the summer, students read The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo. These Bearcats had several creative options to showcase their understanding of the novel, including a pizza box timeline, yearbook, comic strip/storyboard, book bag, or book jacket.

Ms. Glass’s 8th-grade science classes are gearing up for the annual Solar Derby! ☀️🏎️ Students are constructing their solar cars using materials such as solar panels, gears, O-rings, wood blocks, and more. Once the cars are built, students will calculate the base speed of their model cars using speed equations.

We can’t wait to see which team will win the Solar Derby later this fall!
