I lost this weekend. My first tournament as a black belt, in front of my students, and it wasn’t close.
I got over it quickly, because I didn’t go to win. I went to be in the water.
When I’m winning, life is easy. When I’m losing, I find out who I really am: my patterns, my weak links.
I could curate a life where I never see those. I could stay in the harbor, roll only with my own students, and call myself an amazing sailor. But that life is boring, with no purpose. I’d be looking at the ocean, longing for more, a prisoner of my own thoughts.
Life is the open ocean. We either build the capacity to sail it or we stay tied to the dock. Capacity is tools, skills, and what you tell yourself when things go wrong.
