At Stewart Maritime Academy we're constantly striving to provide you updates on the Coast Guard’s application process and impacts during the DHS shutdown. Here are the highlights from the April 17, 2026 guidance:

Applications

All mariner applications continue to be received and put in line in order they are received, but are not actively being processed.

MMCs and Medical Certificates that expire between January 1 and May 31, 2026 remain valid until August 31, 2026. Mariners must carry expired MMC and a copy of the NMC letter while sailing.

Additional information letters, approval to test letters, mariner training course completion certificates, and drug test letters that expire between February and May 2026, are extended until August 31, 2026.

All classes and testing on site at Stewart Maritime Academy will continue as scheduled.

The new multimillion dollar Credential Submission Portal (ASAP)! I feel like I could have done a better job for half that 😂!

-Maybe a different submission button for each doc needing to be uploaded so that it's more user friendly.

But if you know what forms and docs to send and how to fill them out...then it's pretty self explanatory 😂!

But at least it's better than the old way.
