Lowe’s and SkillsUSA are continuing to support the future of the skilled trades. Through this support, our chapter was able to upgrade our welding program to provide instruction in Tig welding. Additionally, our electrical class was able to pursue robotic motor control projects with equipment purchased with the grant.

Lowe’s provided more than $500,000 in grants for SkillsUSA
chapters to upgrade tools or equipment and purchase materials or
supplies for students. Thank you Lowe’s and SkillsUSA!

As you know, our chapter has been selected to receive a $12,800
grant through a partnership between SkillsUSA and Lowe’s. With
these funds, our electrician class will create a state-of-the-art robotic motor control project. Additionally, the welding department will be able to purchase the tools and equipment to train students in TIG welding. This summer, we will be offering a TIG welding course and students will receive hands-on, practical training in this welding method.

Our computer, electrical and welding students took home gold and silver at the regional Skills USA competition held in hybrid format from January 15-February 12! Congratulations to them and their instructors, Mr. Ramirez, Mr. Milburn and Mr. Garcia for their hard work. All of our students who competed will be advancing to the state competition in Ontario April 21-24, 2022.

Exciting News! Our chapter has been selected to receive a SkillsUSA grant provided by Lowe’s. We were selected to receive $12,800. Through this program, Lowe’s is providing $500,000 in grants for SkillsUSA chapters to upgrade tools or equipment and purchase materials or supplies for students all focused around supporting the future of skilled trade. Thank you Lowe’s and SkillsUSA!

The projects that “314k new welding professionals will be required by 2024. That means an estimated 78,500 welding jobs need to be filled each year.”

Industry professionals with years of real-world experience prepare students in our Career Technical Education (CTE) program for entry-level employment, career advancement, and industry certification.

Welding 1-3 classes are available at Harbor Occupational Center, Maxine Waters Employment Preparation Center, North Valley Occupational Center, and Slawson Southeast Occupational Center!

Congratulations to MWEPC Electrician students! In the Battle of the Classes, the Los Ohmies team from Maxine Waters EPC took prizes and the gold trophy on Saturday, January 15, 2022. Congratulations to the nine Electrician students in Henry Milburn’s Motor Controls class. They competed in an inaugural electric motor car competition with students from . The students raised money to purchase their car kits and applied the skills learned in class to build two model cars for the race. The race categories were On Road and Off Road. Los Ohmies won both! We applaud the students and teacher for an outstanding performance.

Important Return to School Update:
Los Angeles Unified now requires COVID-19 testing for all students and employees, regardless of vaccination status, before the first week back from winter break. All students and employees will be required to have proof of a negative COVID-19 test in order to come onto campus on January 11.

For information on testing centers and to make a COVID-19 test appointment at a Los Angeles Unified site, please visit lausd.net/covidtestingappt or call the Family Help Desk at (213) 443-1300. While appointments are encouraged, no appointment is needed for Los Angeles Unified COVID-19 tests.
