Watching the today reminded me of the time I went to the 2009 inauguration of our first Black President, Barack Hussein Obama! ๐I had front row tickets (adjacent to the stars) bc of a family friend from my Chicago days. ๐โ๐พ

Falling in love with Joan Didion. โค๏ธ๐๐ค
It has been nice to take a break from screen-based media consumption for a moment and soak in some story. As I just moved to L.A., I figured it would be good to buy some sun tan lotion, a humidifier and Joan Didion.
Iโve never read her work and when I was googling about for some literary direction on how to interpret my new home, her name popped up. California living requires it. And I am pleasantly amused by my findings. โบ๏ธ๐๐พ๐ด

Had a splendid time eating homemade kugel, challah, roasted dates and delicious apples for the new year on the Upper East Side. I learned a lot about egg cream, Pittsburgh and just enjoyed the sun w/ some great New Yorkers. โบ๏ธ๐๐พโจ

Meditations on TRUTH from Poughkeepsie... ๐๐๐พโจ๐ป
I took a minor sabbatical from the city to enjoy the Hudson River Valley in Poughkeepsie for a few days to clear my head. I enjoyed the lovely view over the Catskills, but two things struck me:
1) I was personally bothered by the lack of historical info about the indigenous people of this area, the Lenape people. The โHudson Riverโ was called, โMahicantuckโ before Europeans arrived in the 1600s. Where is the historical info pertaining to how the Lenape used the land and the river in this area? I grew up in Illinois and indigenous history was way more present. The State of New York can do much better.
2) I was pleasantly surprised by this Sojourner Truth statue by at the end of Poughkeepsieโs famous Walkway. It was a great reminder of her abolitionist presence in the area and of the missing African-American history in the region. Slavery only officially ended in 1827 in New York and it was a gradual and messy process. Slavery wasnโt just North vs. South. It was everywhere. โ๐พ
Otherwise, it has been a nice respite from city living. ๐ I wish I took the Metro North more often!
