Books by Svetlana Alexievich and Complete Book Reviews 04/26/2022

36 years. Today marks 36 years since the nuclear accident at the Chernobyl power plant.
We stopped producing our live adaptation of Svetlana Alexievich's book in 2011 and eight years later the HBO series brought Chernobyl to a much wider audience.
With everything happening in Ukraine right now, I urge you to read some of Alexievich's other works. She spends years speaking to citizens there, chronicling their real words. It is not light by any means, but these books will give you insight into Ukraine's history and their societal, cultural lives.

The forgotten dogs of Chernobyl 07/08/2019

There were many stories that touched people in our adaptation. Different stories reached different people.
The poodle scene always hit them.
"We were digging ditches and dumping all of the animals’ bodies into it. One day….it was just an ordinary ditch, a deep one. Not regulation. We dumped all of the animals out of the trunk into the hole, and this little poodle climbed out. No one had a bullet left. Not one bullet. We pushed him back into the hole and covered it with dirt. I still feel bad about it."
