UTLA Charter Educators

United Teachers of Los Angeles represents over 900 teachers and other certificated staff in charter to the San Fernando Valley.

UTLA represents more than 900 teachers and other certificated staff at independent charter schools, at sites from South L.A. When charter school educators unionize, we gain a voice in decision making at their school, and as more educators join UTLA, we all gain more power to improve our profession.

After forming Unite Summit over two years ago, educators from Summit’s 7 school network are pushing hard for a fair contract. Only 30% of teachers currently working at Summit have been with the organization for more than three years; this high turnover harms students. Union educators are fighting for a contract that provides experienced teachers with job security, a voice in important decisions that impact their classrooms, and sufficient support for their English language learners. Here’s an idea for a horror movie: an executive from Lionsgate Films is appointed as chair of the board of a charter school chain. He fights the teacher’s union by ignoring ’s order to bargain.

Unfortunately, this isn’t a movie. This is real life. Joe Drake and the Alliance College-Ready Public Schools Board of Directors are refusing to bargain with us. It’s unacceptable.

Alliance, we won’t be deterred. Joe Drake and the Alliance Board of Directors need to stop the delay and begin bargaining now. That’s the only way this movie ends.

“I have been directly impacted by the subjective evaluation system that Alliance has in place for its teachers. But to point out a much larger problem, at ESAT alone, we lost 12 teachers and counselors last year. And we replaced them with 6 NEW educators.

Having good, qualified teachers is the single most important factor in a student's education. Alliance needs to prioritize keeping good teachers. High turnover directly impacts student learning, and leads to the achievement gaps we see specifically in the communities we serve. By unionizing, we will have the ability to bargain for things like competitive pay scales that acknowledge educator experience and education and help recruit and retain highly-qualified teachers.

Being able to bargain collectively is very different than only having educator input where Alliance still makes all final decisions. We want to make these decisions as equals. Teachers deserve the right to bargain for best practices with Alliance and to ensure the best for our students.” -Erin Belefski, Art, ESAT

Los Angeles Unified School District, Alliance College-Ready Public Schools should be held accountable for their actions. And they should be at the bargaining table. Yesterday.

Alliance's current behavior is nothing less than a violation of PERB and their public commitment to honor PERB’s decision. Alliance is simply utilizing PERB and the Courts to try and delay and frustrate our efforts. Sadly, we’ve seen at the national level the dangerous trend of attempting to circumvent the democratic will. No one is above the law.

Stop the delay and respect your educators!

On December 18, 2020 PERB’s issued a complaint noting that Alliance has “failed and refused to bargain in good faith with the Charging Party in violation of Government Code section 3543.5(c).”

Alliance College-Ready Public Schools, it’s time to sit down and bargain with us.
