Navigating the Academy: A “How to” Workshop for Graduate Students of Marginalized Identities

Michael Moses, Education, Graduate Writing Center Consultant

Bobby Smith, English, Graduate Writing Center Consultant

Feeling overwhelmed by the “hidden curriculum” of the Academy? Concerned that academic professionalization does not account for your experiences as a first generation college and/or student of color? This workshop covers aspects of the “hidden curriculum” specifically related to the three pillars of the Academy — research, teaching, and service. Through discussion and activities, attendees will leave with a working knowledge of how to navigate academic processes and succeed as minoritized scholars.

Hi everyone, this isn't a UGSP specific event, but is very relevant to this group's mission. Tomorrow, Thursday, June 25th, at noon in the James West Alumni Center, there's going to be a community gathering to honor the nine lives lost in the shooting at the Emanual African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. I hope to see you there.

Hi all,

Are any of you interested in a stipended position for the upcoming year? It's time sensitive as there are resource allocation meetings taking place soon. Basically, you'd serve on the committee that allocates funding for community service projects. Please see the message below and message me if you're interested:

We need to make a replacement appointment for the Community Activities Committee in the next few days if at all possible.

Here is a description of the stipended position:

Community Activities Committee:
Community Activities Committee (CAC) provides funds for student-initiated, student-led community service programs that work with economically and socially disadvantaged communities. The CAC Regular Fund is submitted in the summer and provides the largest allocations for ongoing community service projects that take place throughout the academic year. CAC Minifund provides quarterly funding for smaller service programs or to augment funding for larger service programs. Summer Funding offers funds for programs that take place during the summer. The Summer Fund primarily applies to groups that have applied and have received an allocation from the regular CAC fund.

Committee Member responsibilities:

Allocation of Funds

CAC members are responsible for the allocation of CAC funds and thus must be available for CAC hearings and deliberations.

Required Meetings

Program Activities Board and CAC meetings: There will be three required PAB meetings during the year to discuss any issues. Committee meetings are usually part of the PAB meetings. There may be a few subcommittee meetings and emergency meetings called as needed.

Site Visit Requirements:

Site visits are important to hold projects accountable and also to support projects in the work that they do. Each CAC member will be assigned as a liaison 7-9 of CAC funded projects. Each CAC member is required to attend at least two site visits per project during the academic year.

Please let me know if you are interested. We'd like to have someone appointed by Friday or as late as next Monday.
