Why do parents hire independent school advisors or even college counselors?

- K-12 School advisors work specifically for the family to find the best fitting school for that student. As opposed to marketing the school that advisor works for. An admissions director is essentially a marketing person to recruit for their own school.

- Independent college counselors give detailed and concierge service to their clients and students to help them plan, prep and apply for colleges. Guiding them through high school course choices, reviewing transcripts, school choice, essay writing and the application deadline process. Essentially they will map out their college path for them.

As all parents know, a child will more easily listen to a 3rd party voice than their own parents advice.

- The problem is, most counselors working full-time at high schools don’t have time to meet the needs of every student at the school who needs help navigating the process. High schools these days can have up to 2000 students or more. There might be 4-10 counselors working at that school. Obviously they do not have the time to reach the specific planning needs of each student.

What is one of the most difficult areas for a student writing their college essay?

Picking the essay topic.

Tips:

* If the admissions committee has not specified a topic, then have your student choose one that highlights their intent of admission.
Why do they want to attend that college?

* Whether the topic is about overcoming a persistent obstacle or a personal challenge , or maybe it’s highlighting one’s passions and interests, choosing a topic that portrays his or her’s strengths always works in their favor.

How to Motivate the Unmotivated Child | Empowering Parents 02/03/2020

I’ve been asked by some parents lately on ways to help motivate their children whether for school or sports.

The first thing I tell parents is that “unmotivation” is actually your child putting up resistance and desiring some sort of control over their own lives.

The key is to find out what motivates your child and guide them to see the bigger picture of consequences in a way that resonates with your child’s desires, not your desires.

How to Motivate the Unmotivated Child | Empowering Parents Screaming and yelling won't motivate your child. Here's how to use accountability and consequences to get your child motivated, without all the fighting.

Irish school ditches homework, replaces it with acts of kindness 12/08/2019

Such an innovative way to encourage compassion and kindness within the school system. Encouraging kindness is the quickest way to diminish the incidents of bullying.
Maybe some type of hybrid implementation of this would work in U.S. schools.

Social-Emotional learning is so undervalued in our current education system, yet I see this as one of the most important in teaching our children.

Giving our kids knowledge is great, but what happens when they haven’t been taught how to utilize that knowledge through self-awareness?

Self-awareness will help kids understand one's own emotions, personal goals, and values. This includes accurately assessing one's strengths and limitations, having positive mindsets, and possessing a well-grounded sense of self-efficacy and optimism.

We all know that education for our children is important to us. However, education goes far beyond academics and what our children are learning in a classroom. Make sure to educate them on values such as self-love, self-respect , tenacity, resourcefulness, creativity, communication, service, ingenuity, authenticity, individuality and compassion. ❤️

I’ve personally seen that children with these types of qualities will go on to be the well-rounded leaders and achievers that make a difference in their own lives and all those around them.

One of the reasons why I like project based learning over a direct instruction teaching method that’s found in the majority of traditional public schools.

Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging, and complex question, problem, or challenge.

The Decline of Play and Rise in Children's Mental Disorders 11/22/2019

Teaching your kids to be an advocate for themselves is far more beneficial for them than to take care of their problems for them. This leads to indirectly allowing them to believe they are powerless , thus creating a victim mentality.

The Decline of Play and Rise in Children's Mental Disorders There's a reason kids are more anxious and depressed than ever.
