🚀 Kicking off our spring Advanced Programs, artworxLA and the hosted our Family Orientation this past Saturday—launching another exciting season of growth and exploration!
Families experienced our mindfulness-based learning series, Getty Art Impact, firsthand, meditating with artworks like Martin Puryear’s 45-foot sculpture That Profile (1999) and going behind the scenes of the Getty Center campus. Through this practice, participants build focus and awareness while deepening their connection to artworks, place, and their own creative work.
We also introduced SCRAP GODS, our Fashion Design Fellowship, where participants will stitch together skills, identity, and possibility. Stay tuned—our young designers will be making it out to sew shop and more. 🧵👘🪡🤭
Most importantly, it was beautiful to see artworxLA families come together, and for over 90%, it was their first visit to the Getty. Family support is essential to our students’ success, and we also want families to know that artworxLA and our partners are always a resource for you, too!

New year, new practices! We’re honored to bring this phrase to life as one of eleven organizations receiving the 2025–26 Lark Award, centering collective care, rest, and well-being. 🪷🫂
With support from the Durfee Foundation, we’re excited to embark on a journey exploring what collective care looks like within our organization—work that is essential to sustaining our impact in the communities we serve. Our goal is to foster a culture of mutual care that supports long-term, sustainable impact in our roles as educators, artists, and community members.
Thank you to the Durfee Foundation, and warm congratulations to our fellow award recipients! 🎗️

🔆 In a challenging year, artworxLA’s connection to our youth guided our work, and the generosity of new and longtime supporters helped keep that light shining through annual fund contributions. 🔆
We show up for our youth, because they inspire us through the care they extend to one another and their communities. Together, we build a culture of wellbeing rooted in creativity that empowers students beyond the classroom. They engage in important dialogue across our city and share their voices; be sure to check out their presentations at MOCA Geffen in April 2026. This growth is made possible by the steadfast presence of artists who enter classrooms weekly, year-round, and encourage students to rise to challenges by building a creative practice.
For more than 33 years, artworxLA has supported alternative education students facing some of the greatest barriers to graduation; while we have seen meaningful progress, graduation rates at many alternative high schools can remain as low as 20–24% without a strong community of support.
Please help us keep shining the light on this work by making a contribution on the last day of 2025. Click the link in our highlights and in our bio, to make your tax deductible year-end contribution today! 🫂

Fall Public Presentations are less than a month away! (Mark your calendars!)
📅 December 5 | ⏰ 11am–12:30pm
📍 Hammer Museum at UCLA
10899 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90024
People often ask—how do we get to this point? It’s a 3-step creative journey:
1️⃣ Our staff train with our cultural partners to build meaningful connections between exhibition content and our students’ lived experiences.
2️⃣ Professional artists bring inquiry and creativity into the classroom, guiding students through projects that showcase their unique voices—and introducing everyone to new materials and art forms along the way!
3️⃣ Students present their finished works at our partner site, celebrating their growth with peers and the public. They also get to tour the exhibitions and see the art they’ve been in dialogue with all semester long.
It all comes together at the Hammer Museum—join us! (RSVP link in bio)

Deep breath in 🫁, and out 😮💨…
The first Getty Art Impact session is underway! Last Saturday twelve students and alums began their mindfulness journey through art, surrounded by the stunning architecture of the Getty Center!
Led by Lilit Sadoyan, we practiced meditation and mindful observation techniques in the quiet galleries before they opened to the public—pausing with intention before Vincent van Gogh’s Irises (1889).
We’re deeply grateful to Brittany Prieto, Alice Doo, Liz Andres, and Getty Education for co-facilitating and making this program happen.

We’re thrilled for Made in L.A. 2025, on view now at the Hammer Museum at UCLA!
We’re also proud to continue our partnership with The Hammer for Fall 2025, and can’t wait to share our students’ presentations inspired by the exhibition on December 5. Our students and Teaching Artists are already exploring the artists and ideas behind Made in LA. They’ve been reimagining childhood memories through sculpture, inspired by Alake Shilling and Ali Eyal, swipe to see some of their creative journeys in action!

👩🏽🏫🖼️ Liliflor Ramirez, p.k.a. Liliflor, is an artist, muralist, and
cultural art educator who uses art for healing and
transformation. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Lilia’s art
is a love letter to her community, culture, and roots. As a
first-generation Mexican American Chicana, her journey
began in the underground art scene of the 80s + 90s hip
hop and graffiti movements fueling her passion for
creativity, education, and transformation. An artivist hybrid
visionary, Liliflor has served her community since 1994,
co-founding the Peace and Justice Center (1995) and
Mujeres de Maiz (1997). She opened her first gallery, First
Street Studios, in 2006, and now works from Kalli Luna
Gallery in Boyle Heights. Her curated projects include
Sounds of Solidarity L.A. and Diosa Magic, a collective of
artisans offering interactive cultural art workshops.
Lilia finds joy in biking, painting outdoors, and gardening.
Working with the plants grounds her, connects her to the
cycles of growth, and offers quiet moments of reflection
that nurture her art practice. She recharges and stays
inspired by attending exhibitions and concerts with her
family, deepening the bonds that support her creative work.
We are proud to have Lilia guiding the next generation of
artists in our classrooms! Her deep connection to Los
Angeles allows students to explore their city through the
perspective of an artist who represents their community.
We look forward to seeing the powerful art they create
together! 🤲🏼✨🔮

We’re so thrilled to welcome Lizette Hernández to our community of Teaching Artists! 📣
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Lizette is a first-generation Mexican-American artist whose practice centers on sculpture and collaboration with clay. Guided by listening to the land, her work explores inheritance, regeneration, and the interconnectedness of all living things. Her process blends tradition with experimentation. She uses plant matter in pit firing, Raku techniques, and unexpected elements like recycled glass! Lizette brings both skill and spirit to her teaching, inviting students to explore material, memory, and meaning.
Her work has been exhibited at cultural institutions around the city, including Charlie James Gallery, Jeffrey Deitch Gallery, the Craft Contemporary Museum, and most recently had an installation with titled “LAND DREAMS.” Lizette’s studio sits right across from our new artworxLA headquarters, just steps from the Rose Garden where her work was installed. She often visits the garden to connect with the healing energy of running water and roses. We’re so grateful to have you leading our workshops, Lizette, and we’re here to support you every step of the way! 🫂🤲🏼🗿

Anthony’s short commercial for his clothing brand, Barrio con Cultura, showcases how LA communities actively and uniquely come together. Alice’s short commercial for her brand, Artist Journal, shows how a laptop case, a messenger bag, or other accessories can be an opportunity to be bold about your identity.
We’re deeply grateful for the skills and guidance of our mentors, and ! We’re so proud of everything interns built this summer in collaboration with —fresh off their 2025 Emmy Award for Outstanding Commercial!
