CST alum Rev. Dr. Emily Nelms Chastain MDiv/MA '19, currently serving as Assistant Professor of Christian History & Methodist Studies at SMU Perkins School of Theology, is featured in a UM News article this week celebrating 70 years of women’s ordination in the United Methodist Church. You can read the article here: https://www.umnews.org/en/news/why-the-1956-women-clergy-vote-matters
We are reminded this week of all of the extraordinary women throughout CST’s history who have paved the way for greater inclusion and equity––in education, ministry, and beyond. And we are grateful for women like Emily Bennet, who graduated from our school in 1890 (while we were located on the campus of USC), becoming the very first woman in California history to graduate from a theological school.
You can also hear Rev. Dr. Nelms Chastain discuss women's ordination in an interview with UM Archives and History here: https://www.resourceumc.org/en/content/utm-70th-ordination-live-podcast
We hope you will join us in remembering and celebrating the many women who continue to have such a profound impact on our communities and churches.
