How do scientists use their senses to make observations?

Our Pod (kindergarten and 1st grade) scientists stepped into the lab to explore the world through their 5 senses! Here is a peek inside the hands-on exploration centers:
Sight: Investigating up close with microscopes.
Hearing: Testing our ears with a sound discrimination challenge.
Smell: Sniffing out mystery scents and making predictions.
Touch: Exploring unique textures through hands-on discovery.
Taste: Drawing and categorizing favorite foods.

Science is all about asking “what could happen?” and paying close attention to the world around us. 🌎

Our Wolves are off and running—literally! On the heels of a successful showing at the Woodbridge Invitational (where 10 of our 14 upper school cross-country runners earned a medal, and everyone who ran set a personal record) both the upper school girls *and* boys cross-country teams placed FIRST at our first league meet of the year this week. It’s an incredible start to the league season and a testament to the hard work, determination, and teamwork our runners have already brought to the course. Way to go, Wolves!

During this week’s Professional Development day, Wildwood faculty dug into the relationship between mastery and lifelong learning—exploring how deep understanding can become a foundation for continued curiosity, growth, and new learning.

What does the word “affinity” mean? Our 10th-grade students teamed up with 3rd-grade students to support the learning—using a concept everyone could feel: handedness! As an added bonus, our 10th and 3rd graders are pairing up as buddies this school year! They’ll meet weekly to collaborate on projects, build lasting connections, and learn from each other.

How can a model help us understand Washington, D.C.? And what can the design of a building or monument tell us about its meaning?

Fifth graders brought their study of U.S. government and history into the Block Room, working together to recreate the National Mall and its government buildings, monuments, memorials, and museums.

Along the way, students put research into action—planning, measuring, problem-solving, negotiating ideas, testing structures, and revising their work. The result is more than an impressive build: It’s a way for students to make their thinking visible and turn their understanding of history, government, and place into something tangible.

There was lots to cheer about at this morning’s All School Meeting as the Class of 2027 arrived for their first Senior Siblings visit of the year! Elementary students gave their senior “siblings” a very warm Wildwood welcome with handmade signs and *plenty* of enthusiasm. Here’s to a year of shared experiences, new friendships, and cross-campus connections!

At this week’s Middle and Upper School Club Fairs, students shared their interests, invited classmates to get involved, and discovered new ways to connect with the Wildwood community. From longtime passions to brand-new pursuits, clubs give students space to explore, lead, create, and find their people.

We were so thrilled to launch our DEIB work for the year with parents/guardians from across all three school divisions on Tuesday night. Monique Marshall, former Wildwood faculty and parent of alumni, facilitated an evening of conversation, learning, and connection around affinity, identity, and belonging—including a birth order affinity exercise that offered a relatable way to experience how shared aspects of identity can create connection, community, and joy. Looking forward to continuing this important work together throughout the year, especially with our newly expanded parent affinity groups!

What happens when 11th graders put their heads together to capture the personality of their Advisory? You get a whole lot of creativity, collaboration, and very good puns.

As part of a beloved Wildwood tradition, students worked together to design Advisory flags that reflect who they are and the values they share, then presented their creations to a panel of guest judges.

A little friendly competition and a fitting start to a year of Advisory connections!

Missed last night’s lunar eclipse? Thanks to the Wildwood Institute for STEM Research and Development (WISRD), here’s your second chance! Lead astronomer Greyson W. ’28 captured these amazing images using Wildwood’s new Dwarf3 astrophotography telescope. Throughout the year, WISRD will be using it to observe, track, and collect images of celestial objects, and deepen their investigation of the night sky. Balancing our solar system’s light and shadows is no easy feat—fantastic job, Greyson, on these stellar shots!
