Faculty appreciation! Tamsin Carlson is currently serving as the Chair of Modern Dance at the Colburn School’s Trudl Zipper Dance Institute.
Educated in the UK at the Arts Educational School and London Contemporary Dance School, she began her career performing with Edge 4D, the Toutes Femmes dance project, and various independent choreographers. In New York, she danced with Merce Cunningham’s Repertory Understudy Group (RUG) and was a faculty member at the Cunningham School. She also toured internationally with the Lucinda Childs Dance Company for its 25th Anniversary Concert.
Since relocating to Los Angeles in 2000, Tamsin has been a prominent figure in the West Coast dance community. She is a longtime member of the Rudy Perez Performance Ensemble, earning a Lester Horton Award nomination for her performance in The Art of Rudy Perez, and has served as the Associate Artistic Director of Vox Dance Theatre. Globally, she has collaborated on experimental performances with the Germany-based Fabien Prioville Company. A career highlight was performing in the triple city Night of 100 Solos, in celebration of Merce Cunningham’s 100th birthday.
An esteemed master teacher specializing in Cunningham technique, Tamsin has taught at CalArts, CSU Long Beach, Irvine Valley College, LA Dance Project, and Pieter Studios. Tamsin received her Master of Fine Arts in Dance in May 2025.
