Today was the first day of school at Invictus Leadership Academy, a brand new TK-5 public school in South LA!!! This sentence utterly fails to communicate just how extraordinary an accomplishment this is. We have so much admiration for founder LaTonya Derbigny and the many years she has put into meeting this moment. Every student she impacts at Invictus also promises to transform that kid’s family—for generations to come. And students will know every day that Black and Brown lives matter. So proud to have supported her journey.

We’re heartbroken to learn that our friend Ernie Levroney passed away this weekend. He was Head of School at The Wesley School & had aspirations to launch a new charter, PRIME School, to better serve all kids in LA. So kind-hearted & almost always smiling. Full of life. We’ll miss his wonderful soul & remember him fondly. 💔

CONGRATS to Reframe Fellow LaTonya Derbigny for getting the green light to launch Invictus Leadership Academy in Watts next fall! A saga of vision, hard work, and perseverance, many years in the making. She’s a 4th-generation Watts resident, former chemist, 20+ year teacher in traditional public schools, and champion for closing achievements and opportunity gaps, especially for black, brown, and low-income students. After 12.5 hours at the LAUSD board room, she would not be denied by an establishment and political environment dead-set to deny new charters. We’re so excited for all the good she will do for families in South Central Los Angeles! Learn more at https://invictusla.com/. Los Angeles Unified School District

Five Things We’re Learning from Schools in Our Portfolio By Stacey Childress, CEO, NewSchools Venture Fund
We believe in challenging the status quo and thinking differently in everything we do.
We have a dream for a learner-centered public education system in which all children are prepared and excited for their futures, are able to deeply engage in their own communities, their nations, and the world, and are able to fulfill their potential.
Our path to fulfilling this dream is to help leaders change mindsets, challenge assumptions, and bring out their best. Our name—Reframe—communicates a desire to help people look at beliefs, ideas, and relationships in new or different ways, unleashing them to create bolder, more effective solutions.
We believe that during the next 20 years, more may change in our employment landscape and the way we work than has happened in the last 2,000 years. We believe that exponential advances in digital technologies and their civic and social implications are among the most important topics in the world right now. The disruptive impacts on global commerce and labor markets raise three important questions:
