Nationwide protests and a general strike took place January 30 in response to heavy ICE presence in Minnesota and the killings of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti by ICE agents in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Protests were organized nationwide to encourage Congress to stop funding ICE. Many of those protests were held in the form of school walkouts, including one at Venice High School.

Venice’s cheer program has grown bigger than ever. After graduating 13 seniors last spring, the team entered the new season focused on rebuilding, training new athletes, and preparing for upcoming competitions, according to coach Joana Trocan-Garrett.

In response to operations employed by immigration enforcement, Los Angeles Unified School District (L.A.U.S.D.) has expanded their policies in order to maintain the safety of marginalized students.
The District’s efforts to revise protective policy occurred after multiple hostile interactions between ICE agents and L.A.U.S.D. students, according to L.A.U.S.D. superintendent Alberto Carvalho during a press conference at Edward R. Roybal Learning Center August 11.

The Venice High cross country team is kicking off the season with fresh energy and a focus on rebuilding. After graduating a large group of seniors last year, coach Ivan Gomez said that this fall is about starting over and developing new talent.
“We lost a lot of seniors, so it’s one of those seasons where we’re just hoping to get new runners and start again,” Gomez said. While the boys side of the roster has grown, the team is seeing fewer girls competing compared to past year.

It took place on October 4, on the campus football field, with a large attendance of cubs fundraising and families enjoying the festivities. This 14-year long screening of the movie Grease is a highlight for the Venice community every year.
