Nearly half of California's high school seniors are locked out of four-year public universities for not completing the A-G course sequence. But is A-G still the right measure of "readiness"?

In a new EdSource commentary, UCLA Ed&IS' Marisa Saunders and LMU's Michael Matsuda argue it's time for UC to open a broader conversation; one that recognizes what students demonstrate through internships, community-based research, and civic action.

Last week, UCLA Ed&IS hosted the EcoRise Summer Institute, bringing together K-12 teachers and school leaders from across the country to embed sustainability and climate literacy into their classrooms. Now in its ninth year, the Institute welcomed Arizona State’s Walton College of Global Futures for the first time.

As Dean Christie shared, it’s not just what we teach, but how we teach it that will help solve the climate crisis 🌎

ICYMI: UCLA Ed&IS closed out the academic year strong 📚

From celebrating the Class of ‘26 at Commencement to honoring the legacy of Karen Hunter Quartz as she retires, we had plenty to be proud of. Our students shone at UCLA’s Undergraduate Research Week, our alumni earned well-deserved recognition, including Suzanne Seplow’s Distinguished Career Award and five Teacher Education grads honored by LAUSD and Ozan Jaquette stepped into a new leadership role as SEA President-Elect.

We also spotlighted the vital community behind LISAA and dug into the challenges facing California’s dual language immersion teacher pipeline.

Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in Texas learned they were free, more than two years after emancipation became law. The freedom existed. The news was withheld.

That gap between what is known and who gets to know it sits at the heart of our work. Today we celebrate freedom and recommit to making knowledge something everyone can reach.

Congratulations to fourth year UCLA Ed&Is PhD candidate Passion Lord on receiving the 2026 UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award for Teaching Assistants!

Lord teaches the course “Research in Black Life Institutions and Culture,” in affiliation with the UCLA Bunche Center, and “Comparative Black Studies Research Methods,” helping students prepare for the UCLA Undergraduate Research Showcase and the Bunch Fellows Research Symposium.

The Distinguished Teaching Award is given to UCLA teaching assistants who demonstrate a pattern of effective teaching that incorporates current pedagogical best practices, aims to inspire and challenge students, and supports the success of all students.

In announcing Lord’s selection, the UCLA Teaching and Learning Center committee noted it was impressed by her innovative teaching methods and ability to inspire and motivate learners.

Congratulations to UCLA Assistant Professor of Environmental Justice in Education Christopher Jadallah who has been awarded the NAED/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship!

His work, “Cultivating Political, Ethical, and Relational Horizons in Garden-Based Learning” seeks to help identify possible horizons for how learning environments can be designed in ways that revitalize land-based and community-based relationships in order to foster socio-ecological well-being.

The NAEd/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship supports career scholars working in critical areas of education research. A highly competitive initiative, this fellowship annually awards 25 of the most exceptional researchers conducting postdoctoral studies relevant to education.

We are so proud of our Ed&IS faculty for the strides they continue to make inside and outside the classroom!

We are excited to announce that UCLA Ed&Is Professor-in-Residence Maryanne Wolf’s book, “Reader, Come Home: The Reading Brain in a Digital World,” has been selected as the 2026 Princeton Pre-Read!

“Reader, Come Home” explores the future of the reading brain and examines how our capacity for critical thinking, empathy, and reflection is evolving in an increasingly digital world.

Established in 2013 by Christopher L. Eisgruber, the Princeton Pre-Read introduces incoming undergraduate students to intellectual life at Princeton University. Each year, members of the incoming class read and engage with a selected book prior to arriving on campus. During Orientation Week and throughout the academic year, students participate in discussions with peers, student leaders, and President Eisgruber.

We celebrate our Ed&Is faculty whose work continues to shape critical inquiry on campuses and across communities worldwide.
