The Colburn School is a leading performing arts school where a renowned faculty provides instruction to dedicated students of all ages. Since 1950, we have equipped students with the skills, support, and opportunity to achieve their highest goals in music, dance, and drama. Our alumni have achieved global recognition as members of major orchestras; as award-winning chamber, solo, and recording artists; and as inspiring teachers. Located in downtown Los Angeles, our campus neighbors Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Music Center, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and The Broad. The Colburn School’s exceptional facilities include a café, performing arts library, and three acoustically superb performance spaces, including Herbert Zipper Concert Hall. Hailed by BBC Music Magazine as “one of the greatest string quartets of the last 100 years,” The Modigliani Quartet brings its precision and warmth to the Zipper Hall stage Thursday, October 22 at 7 pm for a program built on contrast.

They open with Kurtág’s 12 Microludes, twelve brief, tightly concentrated movements that shift through contrasting musical moods in just a few measures each, then turn to Schumann’s lively First String Quartet, a Romantic masterpiece of deep lyricism and virtuosic energy. Pianist Fabio Bidini, Carol Colburn Grigor Piano Chair, joins them for a vibrant finale of Schumann’s Piano Quintet, a work full of heart that revolutionized the genre by treating piano and strings as equal partners in dialogue.

Don't miss an immersive program centered on the human voice, coming to Colburn for its LA premiere: Mayrig (“mother” in Armenian) pulses with passion and celebration, resilience and rage.

Created by Karen Ouzounian and Lembit Beecher, Mayrig weaves recordings of Ouzounian’s mother and grandmother with Armenian melodies from their ancestral Anatolia; songs and stories drawn from their post-genocide Lebanese home; and the beloved music of French and Armenian singer-songwriter Charles Aznavour.

✍️ Mark your Calendars: the Opening Celebrations of our Frank Gehry-Designed Campus Expansion are coming in September 2027!

Come celebrate our new 1,000-seat, in-the-round concert hall, Terri and Jerry Kohl Hall, and the Dance Center, Southern California’s most comprehensive dance facility for performance and training—and the new home for Colburn’s Trudl Zipper Dance Institute!

We'll kick off the festivities with an opening gala on Saturday, September 25, 2027. Then on Sunday, September 26, 2027, community are invited to join a day-long party featuring a ribbon-cutting ceremony and free performances throughout Colburn’s campus—including inaugural performances at the Dance Center—and a grand finale concert in Terri and Jerry Kohl Hall in the evening.

The celebrations will continue over the following week with performances by acclaimed guest artists, visiting ensembles, resident organizations, faculty, and students, exemplifying Colburn’s unique position in Los Angeles at the intersection of education and performance.
