The 1960s were a defining decade in the Mount's history.

After the devastating Bel Air Fire in 1961 destroyed several campus buildings, the Mount community came together with remarkable resilience. Classes resumed just two days later, and the College rebuilt while continuing to expand its mission.

In 1962, the Doheny Campus opened in Downtown Los Angeles, becoming a vibrant center for learning and opportunity. New academic buildings and programs opened, and the Mount strengthened its commitment to preparing educators, healthcare professionals and leaders dedicated to serving their communities.

As movements for civil rights and greater opportunities for women reshaped the nation, the Mount continued to broaden access to education, welcomed an increasingly diverse student body and encouraged students to engage with the world through programs like Model United Nations.

These snapshots offer a glimpse into a decade of resilience, renewal and purpose.

MBA alumna Crystal Calvillo '21 helped power the FIFA World Cup at SoFi Stadium, leading the technology operations behind all eight matches hosted in Los Angeles. Her story highlights how determination, leadership and a willingness to embrace new opportunities can open extraordinary doors.

Our journey through the decades continues with the 1950s!

The 1950s were a decade of growth, opportunity and community at the Mount. As campus life flourished, students embraced new traditions, built lifelong friendships and prepared to make an impact in their professions and communities.

Behind these snapshots of everyday life, the College was reaching new milestones—from sending its first delegation to Model United Nations and awarding California's first baccalaureate nursing degrees to launching its first graduate programs and expanding the Chalon Campus with Marian Hall of Fine Arts and Carondelet Hall.

1951: The Mount sends its first delegation to Model United Nations at Stanford University.
1952: The College awards California's first baccalaureate nursing degrees.
1954: Marian Hall of Fine Arts opens, creating a new home for music and the arts.
1955: Mother Rosemary Lyons becomes the Mount's fifth president, and the College launches its first graduate programs in Education and Music.
1958: Sister Rose Gertrude Calloway '30 becomes the Mount's sixth president.
1958: Carondelet Hall opens, expanding student housing on the Chalon Campus.

When Glynis Carter Brewster '12 decided to pursue her MBA at Mount Saint Mary’s University, she was looking to strengthen her strategic thinking and leadership skills. The experience did just that—and the relationships she built with classmates and faculty continue to inspire her today.

Now a leader in her field in human resources and career coaching, Glynis remains connected to the Mount by mentoring students and giving back to the community that helped shape her journey.

Our journey through the decades continues with the 1940s.

As the world faced the challenges of World War II, the Mount remained rooted in its mission of educating women to lead with purpose and serve others. The College continued to grow through new academic programs, campus expansion and an increasingly global student community.

The decade also saw the launch of California's first Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, cementing the Mount's legacy of preparing highly skilled, compassionate healthcare leaders. New campus landmarks—including St. Joseph's Hall (now the St. Joseph Administration and Seaver Science Center) and the Charles Willard Coe Memorial Library—reflected the Mount's continued growth and vision for the future.
