This week marked the 68th anniversary of the landmark Brown v. Board decision that deemed racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional. Nearly seven decades later, education remains deeply unequal. Dr. Ann Owens & colleagues at the Stanford Graduate School of Education launched The Segregation Index. The will be a comprehensive resource for tracking neighborhood and school segregation in the US, across every neighborhood and every school. The Segregation Index research team includes Dr. Ann Owens, Dr. sean f. reardon, Dr. Demetra Kalogrides, Dr. Heewon Jang, and Thalia Tom.

The United States social safety net aims to improve the lives of the lowest-income families and individuals. As the term “social safety net” implies, the goal is to provide a support system that “catches” families as they fall into poverty but still encourages work.
