The best teachers are always learning! Current Math 4 LA student, Eduardo Gordiano, has been a participant in UCLA’s Applied and Computational Math Research Experience this summer. He’s been conducting some cool experiments in a fungal lab. 🦠🧫📊

“I’ve been working on several experiments that revolve around the concept of competition. I’ve been studying this with two different types of fungi by placing them in petit dishes under different circumstances which allow for different rates of growth. By doing this I’m allowed to see which strain grows the fastest and the most which allows me to select the best strains to place in the same plate to see who grows the best under different circumstances. I’ve been able to calculate the area and growth rates through MATLAB.”
