This young female is often accompanied by her partner - but today it was just me & her.

I enjoyed the company!

If you haven’t already, please help me raise funds for Swim Tayka - an amazing charity that helps underprivileged children learn to swim in coastal communities around the world. All funds raised go directly to training local instructors to deliver swimming lessons & supporting education projects on how to take care of their local waterways & oceans.

Those two words have been with me through all these months of training. I wasn’t looking for them, they found me.

I heard myself saying them as I shuffled out amongst the StingRays & into the waves on that practice night & I’m sure I’ll catch myself thinking of them again as I get prepped on the boat ready for my first plunge on Tuesday night.

I’ll hold onto them as I swim for a while & then I’ll probably let my mind switch back & forth between images of my favourite people, the odd tune here & there, or maybe just find a rhythm with my breathing & my stroke & just listen to that.

Perhaps if I’m really lucky, I’ll be entertained for while with some bioluminescence coming off my fingertips below the surface with each stroke I take? Who knows?!

I’d just like to say a big thank you to those who will be looking over me &/or right next to me on the swim - my team mates, my partner Kevin Smith who’s been my rock, the observers & Dan Dan the kayak-man (otherwise known as the one & only Dan Simonelli) & Summer Wesson who will be right there by my side keeping me straight ( as possible ). Thank you for all your support.

It’s all about the prep - both mentally & physically. You know some days will be better than others - & that’s ok. You’re out there & you’re putting the time in…

🏊‍♂️ Next Tuesday, our coach Lorna takes on the 20-mile Catalina Channel as part of a relay team swimming for Swim Tayka.
Swim Tayka is a UK-based charity that gives children in underprivileged coastal communities the life-saving gift of swimming and water safety, while teaching them to care for their local waterways and oceans.
Their programmes not only help children gain confidence in the water but also inspire them to become future guardians of the environment. Every donation goes towards training local instructors, delivering swimming lessons, and supporting education projects around the world.
By backing Swim Tayka, you're helping to turn the simple act of learning to swim into something far greater — a ripple of safety, confidence, and change.
Lorna's first official night swim. Cold, dark, unpredictable. All for a cause worth every stroke.
